It is because the Nazka tectonic plate moves eastwards,this scrashed with the South American plate of the Chilian coast.This causes Chile to be a hot spot for earthquakes.
in 2010 there was a huge earthquake which happen in february27 it had a magnitud of 8.8, which is realy hard. it ocurred yust of de coast of central chile.

this leaved some concecuenses such us:
-arround 500 people died, and12,000 where injured and over 800,000people where affected
chile is allways prepared for earthquakes, there are some imediate response for when it happens, such us SERNAPRED,(servcio nacional de prevencion y respuesta ante desastres)

BUT there is an other thing called "sakes" that are super soft kind of earthquakes that their magnitud can be from 1.0 to 5.0. they are formed yust the same way us earthquakes but they are to short and soft that you wouldn't eaven notice.
¡DONT WORRY EARTHQUAKES IN CHILE ARE NOT OFTEN TO HAPPEN!
they yust happen over 25 to 100 years apart.
