How can parents/guardians help students with math at home? There are opportunities for real-life math application all around us. Check out some of these recommendations!

1. Math at the Grocery Store: Students can calculate price per unit, find percentage discounts, weigh produce, estimate the final price, and determine change needed after paying.

2. Baking: Students can measure ingredients, multiply or divide fractions to make more or less than one batch, convert a recipe from metric to standard units, calculate and adjust cooking time per item or weight, and understand ratios and proportions.

3. Traveling: Students can calculate distance to be traveled, estimate fuel usage and determine cost, calculate time traveling based on miles per hour, and determine total money spent on tolls.

4. Calendar Planning: Students can learn time-management skills when they are a part of planning. Create to-do lists and determine order of importance, fill out a calendar for long-term projects and chunk work, or calculate number of days until certain assignments are due or special events will occur.

5. Shopping: Students can calculate discounts, sale prices, tax, and tip whether at a store or restaurant.
