In 2023-2024, I researched the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is a sexually transmitted retrovirus that attacks the immune system and causes chronic inflammation. A practical cure still doesn't exist as of 2024.
HIV Mind Map
This was my compilation of background research done on HIV during the summer of 2023 in a visual form ("mind map.")
I covered three basic topics: the life cycle, treatment, and possible cures for HIV.
As of 2024, there still exists no practical cure for HIV mainly because of the virus's ability to hide within CD4+ or helper T-cells, among other factors.
Somers Proposed Study
HIV causes chronic inflammation, which accelerates the epigenetic aging of people with HIV. My initial proposed project would evaluate the effect of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), such as aspirin or tylenol, on the epigenetic aging of people with HIV.
