Picture this: it's late at night, and the world around you has faded into darkness. Yet, there you are, bathed in the soft glow of your screen, completely engrossed in the latest episode of your favorite series. Time seems to slip away as the characters on screen navigate their tumultuous lives, drawing you into a world far removed from your own. Have you ever found yourself in this scenario, binge-watching a series because you felt too attached to a reality far different from yours?
If so, you're not alone. Welcome to the digital age, where streaming services have become more than just sources of entertainment—they've become friends for many navigating life. Other individuals, such as myself, have utilized streaming media as a way to rest or as an outlet to do away from stressful concerns, whether it is your fastly piling backlogs or pressure for upcoming college entrance applications and examinations.
The use of streaming media as a way to cope or do away from life may be a healthy method in keeping up and/or finding respite from life. Excessive use though? It just might be something YOU may need to find respite from.
Engaging in activities such as watching TV shows or movies is associated with lower levels of psychological distress. Additionally, studies show that streaming media may cause an increase in happiness. Others may cry alongside their favorite characters as they face similar burdens in life. Although, I’m not sure I can relate with Elizabeth Bennet and her issues in the early 19th century, I can relate with wanting to marry for love despite the economic implications of marriage. Also, I just hope I’ll be able to relate with her in her adventures with Mr. Darcy.
Binge-watching or streaming media offer a temporary escape from reality. Streaming media can be used as an escapism and as a way to influence mood. Many modern stories such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Hunger Games, etc. are written by authors who know how to build a world different from reality. Some individuals consume these media (whether from Netflix or Disney) as a way to feel part of that world, some may even go as far as going to Universal Studios and going on platform 9 ¾. Sometimes, reality may be difficult to deal with for an individual so trying to connect or feel part of another world may be a way to find respite or peace, even for a short while.
Through relatable themes and concepts, media in streaming services provide a sense of comfort. Through streaming services, people form a sense of connection by showing similar interests through shows & themes relating to individuals. Individuals may develop a sense of comfort once they feel connected to the media they are consuming, especially when it is relatable to their experience.
It is true that excessive streaming may lead to concerns such as procrastination and social withdrawal, but it's important to recognize that moderation is key. Similar to many habits and activities in life, it should be done in moderation and not consequently one after another.
LaRose et. al (2003) said that “when this problematic media use becomes excessive, it, in turn, can cause life problems, confrontations with significant others, and an inability to stop media consumption once started.” Streaming services offer a wide variety of content genres catering to different emotional needs and preferences, and it's important to acknowledge the potential risks that come with excessive media consumption. You can’t just dive into streaming media without acknowledging the dangers and risks, no? It’ll just be like diving into a pool without checking whether the water is too hot or too cold.
