Was there ever a time that you did not know how to formulate your essay for school? Or even struggled to accomplish school works because you failed to come up with anything? Some students who say yes to these questions actually use Artificial intelligence or AI to solve their academic stresses.
In a click of a button, AI is able to generate a series of words or text that would fit your needs. With this, students who do not have the time or the creativity to accomplish their school works rely on AI to produce the answers for them. With the use of a technology in the accomplishment of the work, the students do not write their own work and not give credit to the source (AI such as Chatgpt) which has led to plagiarizing the content made by this technology.
Given the problem of abusing AI use, school authorities should have authority in enforcing responsible AI with their students. Problems regarding a student’s privacy, security and academic moral or growth can be limited if the teachers and staff oversee what their students do with AI. Additionally, they should take initiative to teach proper use of the technology.
Firstly, an evident problem involving the use of AI technology is the user’s privacy and security. AI such as Chatgpt are easily accessible in websites with one's gadgets. In using AI sites, it is probable that one’s information such as location and activity can be accessed by the company’s authorities. (Sher & Ariela Benchlouch, 2023) Because AI is so accessible and it gets more intricate, problems regarding security issues and privacy may arise especially for people with not much knowledge or experience with such technology.
Furthermore, when students use AI, they lack the ability to experience the process of completing an assessment. Given that, they fail to sense the feeling of achievement after finishing an assignment. (Dignum, 2021) Furthermore, the use of generative AI can potentially give the student a sense of failure for not doing the assigned work in a hands-on manner. They may also use AI because they think that they are not able to give an output capable of satisfying the criteria of what they are assigned to do. (Dignum, 2021)
Additionally, schools should mitigate the use of their student’s AI especially when it comes to school works that heavily involves one's creativity for critical thinking. When students use AI for such school work they are limiting the educational experience and growth that they may attain by completing the work themselves. (Education & Artificial Intelligence, Understanding Plagiarism 2023 | Education for All in India, 2023) In addition, plagiarizing can possibly be present when they use AI as the technology may use external sources which do not end up getting credited. With this it is highly recommended that schools do limit, or even not allow completely, the use of AI in assignments such as essay writing, problem sets and much more. By doing such measures, students may actually experience doing the assessment first hand, therefore growing and learning in creativity and critical thinking.
Although, AI has been used to increase positive performance in school and identify areas of improvement. Some may argue that students' use of AI can boost their confidence and morale in education. (ClassPoint, 2024) Although it may be true for a number of cases, the utilization of Artificial Intelligence should still be controlled by the schools. This is because students still have access to these technologies as is, thus still making the possibility of being unsafe and dishonest likely.
In summary, schools should take charge of how their student’s use AI. More importantly, they should implement policies that limit their excessive use of AI. If they do take into account implementing these initiatives, their students may potentially have a better, safer and more productive learning experience. All in all, the educators should prioritize enforcing these rules for the betterment of their students in education.
