ART TECHNIQUES (GRADES 9, 10, 11, 12)

This hands-on course is designed for students of all abilities. Students use the elements and principles of design to explore a variety of two dimensional and three dimensional art materials and techniques.  2D projects include drawing with various mediums, printmaking, collage, pen and ink and painting with acrylic and watercolor mediums. Students may explore clay, cardboard, wire or recycled books in 3D projects. Students may explore a variety of 3D materials and will construct objects with consideration of both their functions as well as their aesthetic purposes. Students are encouraged to work independently and creatively within the confines of the assignment in order to resolve problems and challenge themselves artistically.

CERAMICS/ART TECHNIQUES (GRADES 9, 10, 11, 12)

This course offers students two different opportunities for artistic expression.
The first part of the course is an opportunity to work with clay in a variety of applications.
Students will learn basic hand building techniques such as slab and coil methods and free standing sculpture. Students will learn about different types of glazing techniques, and learn how the firing process works. Students will engage in experiences that encompass art history, art appreciation, personal expression and cultural influences. Contemporary and historical artists and artistic styles will be addressed through media and discussion.
The second part of this course is an exploration of basic methods used in creating two dimensional (2D) projects including drawing with various mediums, printmaking, collage, pen and ink and painting with acrylic and watercolor mediums. Students are encouraged to work independently and creatively within the confines of the assignment in order to resolve problems and challenge themselves artistically.

ART TECHNIQUES ADVANCED   (GRADES 11, 12)

This course is restricted to students that have successfully completed Art Techniques and have demonstrated an ability and commitment to accepting new challenges as it relates to their art. Students are expected to take their understanding of media, techniques and processes and apply it to the development of personal artistic style. 

Students may also take this course with the approval of the instructor after review of the student’s portfolio. Student work at this level requires an independent effort in order to successfully master technical as well as creative objectives.  

Prerequisites Students must have earned an A- (90-92)  or better in Art Techniques or Art Techniques/Ceramics or provide an independent portfolio of art for review.

ART TECHNIQUES INDEPENDENT STUDY   (Grades 11, 12)
Course:  758A & 758B             Level:  1          Credit:  3

This course is for students that have demonstrated a strong motivation and a desire to continue with artistic development. Students further develop their artistic abilities in preparation for art courses at the college level or to continue growth in their visual communication and problem solving skills. Students will work in a shared classroom space and are expected to work independently with guidance from the instructor. Assignments will be consistent with college portfolio requirements. Availability is limited to existing class size.

CLASSIC FILM FORUM (GRADES 9 & 11)

This course explores many genres of film with emphasis on various aspects of movies including topics such as style, acting, directing, music, sound, social commentary, and context as expressed through story content. Classic films as far back as the early 1900’s to the 1950’s will be studied. Classic films as far back as the early 1900’s through the Golden Age of Hollywood and the resurgence of cinema will be studied.

Some categories of films viewed: Remakes, Art House, Foreign, Film Noir, Animation, Notable Directors, Science Fiction, Music as well as films that reflect the historic legacy of the film industry.


MODERN FILM STUDIES (GRADES 10 & 12)

This course examines the history of cinema as one of the most influential mediums of the 20th and 21st centuries. We will study the aesthetic developments of cinema from the 1970s until today as well as examine the social and economic factors shaping its history. As a new medium, film opened up a wide range of possibilities for artistic expression, education, entertainment, and understanding of the world around us.


We will trace the changing styles, techniques, content, and methods of filmmaking as an art form, as a form of popular media, and as an industry. Along the way, we will consider how cinema is immersed in its social and cultural context by looking at its economics, technology, ideology, and how well-received these films were by the audience of today and yesteryear. Though this course’s scope is necessarily limited, we will look at as wide a range of films as possible—generally feature-length narratives —and place them in their historical and cultural contexts.


CONTEMPORARY FILM FORUM (GRADES 10 & 12)

This course explores many genres of film with an emphasis on various aspects of movies including topics such as technology, acting, directing, music, sound, social commentary, as expressed through story content. More contemporary films will be studied in this course that cover films from the 1970’s to current releases.
Some categories of films viewed: Sequel or Series films, Art House, Foreign, Film Noir, Animation, Notable Directors, Independent Film, and Academy Award nominees.
