Mountain: Yosemite

Yosemite

Yosemite National Park is a national park in California. These 1,200 miles of land is a tropical paradise. Even though Yosemite is a place known for its waterfalls, it does not only have waterfalls. From canyons deep into the Earth to giant sequoias dominating up in the sky and everything in between, this place has low valleys, big meadows, prehistoric sequoias, an expansive wilderness area, and many more. Yosemite also has a lot of wildlife. It has native fish, which include California roach, Sacramento pikeminnow, hardhead, and riffle sculpin. If I were to go to Yosemite, I would explore its nature, try to go around the whole place, and just see the beauty of Nature at its peak. This may not be a day trip so after about a few hours, we would leave for our next destination.

History

Yosemite Valley has been inhabited for nearly 3,000 years, although humans may have first visited the area as long as 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. The indigenous people there called themselves the Ahwahnechee. The California Gold Rush made thousands of European-Americans to come to California in search of gold which made thousands come to Yosemite. The white settlers kicked the Ahwahnechee out of Yosemite and sent them to some reservation in Fresno, California.

The Wawona Tree, also known as the Tunnel Tree, was a famous giant sequoia that stood in the Mariposa Grove. It was 227 feet (69 m) tall, and was 90 ft (27 m) in circumference. When a carriage-wide tunnel was cut through the tree in 1881, it became even more popular as a tourist photo attraction. Everything from horse-drawn carriages in the late 19th century, to automobiles in the first part of the 20th century, traveled the road which passed through that tree. The tree was permanently weakened by the tunnel, and the Wawona Tree fell in 1969 under a heavy load of snow. It was estimated to have been 2,300 years old. It is unclear how much longer it may have lived if it had not been damaged.
