Our first step was to find an essential problem that needed a solution. We focused on the United Nations Goal #4; Quality Education for all. After extensive research and elimination processes, we had made a decision.
Our Essential Question is: How can we improve the educational system to assist underprivileged students?
Sustainable Development Goal #4 To Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
Our focus is on students who face barriers or are deprived from advantages to improve their education. Most especially here, in Ottawa, Ontario.
United Way improves lives locally by moving people from poverty to possibility, helping kids be all they can be, and building strong and healthy communities.
Our Supervisor, Mr Zapasek, set up a gathering with the Principal & Vice Principal of our school, Notre Dame. On this day, we presented our cause, vision and the effects we hope to have. learn more
We took inspiration from this professional look found in a different school.
We set up our initial design, the crest and the colour navy blue. We figured out the quality, quantity, price etc
We ended up going with the ND logo, and bubble letters, instead of regular letters. We took into consideration the needs and wants of students when making our final design
Our next step was to connect with a charity, ask questions and gather information. We set up an online meeting with the Senior Director of United Way East Ontario, where we shared questions and gained insight on the organisation.
In our original pitch to Mr. Zapasek, at the beginning of our journey. Starting with only to members, we explained our case and gathered up support from peers.
We set up a private meeting with our principal in his office. Here we pitched our idea, talked about the connection we had made with United Way, and showed him our final design.
We went took time pitching our purpose (underprivileged students) to students of Notre Dame. We also wore prototypes of our uniform, visiting in every class in the building.
To gain attention and develop our brand, marketing and advertisement was essential. We practiced this in many ways from word of mouth to creating a social media presence. We invited models in and had a photo shoot where they sported our product.
Posters where designed and edited by our members, approved by the principal and posted throughout the school. We made sure to put them up in prominent places.
We gained a following on Instagram, where we marketed our uniform and posted updates. We reached over 800 accounts and gained over 300 likes on posts.
We started spreading the word long before production. Talking to our friends, and teachers collecting feedback, price ranges and more.
During our production process we used a Cricut set, vinyl printer, heat press, professional cameras, Canva editing software, Google sites, Google spreadsheet, Baking Sheet, and many more. These tools were imperative to our production as they made the process effective, safer and faster.
During our journey, we gained a multitude of skills such as working the machinery, communication/collaboration skills, marketing and more.
Our team worked with a variety of tools and machinery, including the cricut machine, vinyl printing and cutting, adobe, canva, google slides, spreadhseet, docs and sites etc.
We took several steps to ensure quality over time, such as quality checks, placement checks and more. We measured the specific angles of the logo and the print at the back.
The troubles we went throught as a group, they may have been small but had big impacts on our buiness. They were various troubles, from problems with our supplier to forgetting to mirror vinyl.
We incountered a rude and unprofessional phone call with one of the workers from tuck gear while asking about sweater size and prices.
When cutting out our ND logos and FTY's the cricket cutter blade was dull and cause us to throw out lots of vinyl.
Our original supplier kept making delays with our original order. we realized we weren't going to get our order so we made a quick change and ordered from Amazon.
We shouldve been more organized and stuck to the fields we had been assigned. A lot of miscommunication and minor mistakes. The workload could have been divided better if people took the initative and be responsible for their own work. We also gained problem solving skills, analyzing the situation and looking for potential solutions. Overall we had a great time, learned alot, and gained lots of experience. Thank you to our supervisor, Mr Zap, our principal, Mr Cloutier, and our sponsors, Ciena : ) !
