Our first school-wide event was organising the kayak cleanup where as the name suggests, picked up trash along the shoreline and floated on the ocean through the means of a kayak. We experienced first-hand the damage to the ecosystem along with its wildlife that the human trash induced. Plastic nets that were purposed for fishing and thrown away to the sea caught various horseshoe crabs and restricted their movement. They were unable to untangle themselves from the nets and would have met their demise if we didn't untangle them. This trip was fruitful and seared a lasting experience of the importance of sustainability and keeping the ocean clean.
Along with the kayak cleanup we organised, we have also decided to clean up the beaches where various trash was littered along the shoreline. It was very disheartening to see the amount of trash that was littered along the beach and allows us to reflect upon the dire state of the earth and the importance of recycling of trash.
