The The Double Wheelchair was designed to make caring for two individuals who require the use of wheelchairs easier for a single caregiver to transport them in a more efficient and safe manner. For example, if an elderly couple has to go out to the store their caregiver may struggle to transport them safely in two separate wheelchairs. This is the reason we created the The Double Wheelchair. Listen to Nevaeh as she shares what inspired her and the rest of team to design and create something to make the world better. Think about it, this could be the future of transportation in the medical field!
Original Blueprint Design of Our Product
Through our research we could not find anything like our connection kit on the market. We have found that there are double strollers and double seated electric wheelchairs. However, double strollers are obviously not suitable for adults or the elderly, only children, and electric wheelchairs can be very pricey, especially a double-seated one. According to Razor.com, Some of the higher end models of electric scooters for adult riders cost upwards of $600 with an electric motor battery charge time of 3.5 hours and a speed of up to 15 mph. However, the average electric scooter cost is around $300. On Amazon.com the price range of double-seated electric wheelchairs are $2,999-$3,249 and not everyone cannot afford to pay such a large amount of money.

Since Regionals, we feel we have made great progress! We meet with our community partner, Cheyenne McKinney, owner of Sandy Valley Hardware, to change our stabilizing metal poles to fiberglass telescoping poles. This makes the design lighter in weight, and able to collapse to fit in the carrying case.
We fixed an issue we had the front wheelchair wanting to roll off the flanges on the dolly by designing and 3D printing Hinged Latches. We learned how to use the online program Tinkercad to design our hinged latch.

We connected with Ronnie Spence, owner of Conerstone Financial Group, to create a possible business model for The Double Wheelchair looking at how much it would cost us to make it, and a possible profit from sales.
After discussing a great deal about our profit, we have decided that a fair price to sell our kit for is $338. This price is significantly lower and affordable compared to any other motorized double-wheelchair! We also decided that we should make 50% profit off of our product. We would then have enough revenue to pay for more materials, in which costs $115 for all of the parts included in our kit. At this rate, our income would allow us to create more of our product and maintain a stable business!
Our future plans for our Double Wheelchair Kit are to (1) apply for a patent for our The Double Wheelchair, and (2) to take it to our local nursing home, Riverview Healthcare Center to let the staff and caregivers experiment with it, once the product is finished. Even further, we would like to be able to package the kits in a carrying case, and strive to keep the cost to make the kit in a price range affordable for those purchasing it and the profit and sale more of our product!
We all have grown a bigger passion for this kit as the process has went on and we have seen how people have struggled. Sierra's mother even told her she seen an elderly couple at Riverview (the nursing home she works at ) who were one behind the other, with one in a regular wheelchair and the other in and electric wheelchair trying to ride around with one another , but obviously it wasn't the easiest task for them. Once she told the rest of the group , it flipped a switch and made us really want to change the lives of people in these situations. We also think about the caregivers who struggle everyday , and to think that we could make their lives so much more efficient and stress-free.
