The Green Schools committee and the whole school worked hard over the last two years to gain our first Green Schools flag for 'Litter and Waste'.
Environmental Care and Awareness
This is how we can improve our environment.
We learnt how important it is to reduce, reuse and recycle.
Children from all classes helped us come up with possible Green School's Slogans. As you can see Ryan, Thomas, Eimear and Rebecca some of our youngest committee members enjoyed some time outside working on their posters. In the end Katie and Caoimhe (6th class) catchy phrase was the winner- Beauty Dies where Litter Lies!
The whole school took part in Green Week. We were looking at ways to care for the environment and how human actions can have an impact on wildlife. During this week we did lots of activities for green schools as well as whole school litter picking. We sorted the rubbish we found into the correct bins after the litterpick.
We made a poster showing how litter can cause harm to a variety of wildlife.
We had a competition to see who could come up with a slogan for our Litter and Waste theme.
The winning slogan is:
Beauty dies, where litter lies.
We learnt the importance of growing plants to help the environment. We love caring for our environment and growing our own food. We love eatimng the vegetables that we grow in our school polytunnel.
The whole school was involved with collecting bottle caps to reuse in an art project. The mural was designed by Ms. Kelleghan and depicts Delvin Castle, the Children of Lir and the farming community in which we live.We had a busy time collecting and sorting bottle caps for this project. People from the local community and local families all helped us too! We collected hundreds of caps!! The finished masterpiece can be viewed from the front of the school and can be seen from the road by passers by and members of the local community.
We re-used unwanted items to create games and toys.
Water
We are now working towards our second green flag. The theme we are currently working on is Water.
We are learning about the importance of water in the environment, conserving water in school and at home, reducing water waste and the water cycle. We are looking forward to lots of fun activities around this theme!
We also planted some trees in our school this year. The Green School's committee planted 3 Hazel trees at the back of our school. We are very excited about this and we are enjoying caring for them. We understand how important it is to plant new trees in our local environment. Children from all classes helped with the planting and lots of children are monitoring them and checking on their progress at break times!
This year our Green School's Team Consists of Mrs Hyndman, Ms King, Meabh, Bill, Abbie, TJ, Leo, Jack B, Ryan G, Dillan, Ciara, Charlie May, Aoibhinn, Charlotte, Patrick S, Aoife C, Isabelle, Rhys, Annie, Ryan H, Darragh C.

Thank you to Commitee members Eva, Darragh, Ryan, Rebecca, Levi, Thomas, Eimear, Ava, Alfie, Jokubas, Jack S, Erin, Cillian, Senan, Nevaeh, Caoimhe, Katie, Liam Fand Jessica.
Here we are at our Green School's Ceremony receiving our first green flag after all the hard work. 😊
We also had a very EGGciting project we worked on at our school. We decided to incubate chick eggs! 🐔🥚Our project was successful and we now have 2 pet chickens at our school. At first they lives in their incubator, then moved into their 'chicken hotel' which our amazing caretaker Barry built for us and then they moved into their coop. Boys and girls from all classes take turns to visit our amazing chicken coop and search for eggs each day. We are so lucky that both of our chickens are laying eggs for us each day 😊Have a look below!
Even though we are now working on the water theme, we must maintain our litter flag too. We have lots of initiatives and jobs around the school to help us maintain our litter flag. 2nd class children are involved in the 'Picker Pals' initiative which helps us manage litter in our school locality and our local areas where we live. Each month, a different class is in charge of litterpicking around our school grounds. We have bin collectors from 6th class who collect the classroom bins daily, monitor them and empty them. They communicate to the committee if there are problem areas within the bins. We have signs in each classroom guiding teachers and students as to what to put into each bin. Compost bins are emptied daily by children from each class. 🚮
Some of our Green School's Committee enjoyed a trip to Navan recently to take part in a Water Workshop where they learned all about water conservation and practices to reduce water waste in the school. They also took part in some exciting water experiments and got some goodies for the school, like pencils and water bottles. It was a great opportunity to work on the school's action plan for the water flag, and to share ideas with various other schools too. We came back with lots of ideas that we can use in all of the classrooms.
Our Green Schools Committee for the year 2024/2025 is led by Ms. King, Ms. Flynn and Ms. Smith.
Our members are; Maisie & Lenny (JI), Michael & Tommy (SI), Aaron & Ava (1st), Oisín Maguire & Amber (2nd), Tyron & Saoirse (3rd), Elsa & Colin (4th), James & Amelia (5th), Jessica & Joseph (6th), Liam (Blossoms), Grace (Gladioli).
2nd Class completed a month of learning about water, how important it is in our daily lives and ways to conserve it.
They learned how rain clouds are formed and how heavy clouds need to be to release their water as rainfall. They did an amazing experiment using jars, shaving foam, water and food colouring to show this. Check it out below!
We checked out the Waterways Ireland website and learned lots of useful information about canals, bridges and locks. It really is exciting engineering!
We carried out a test on all toilets in the school by adding a few drops of food colouring into the cisterns to check for any leaks.
We found one or two that our wonderful caretaker Barry took care of swiftly, phew!
We know and care about the importance of conserving water in our daily lives, we made these nice posters to remind others of the simple ways that water can be saved.
Environmental Awareness Officer Visit
Recently, we had the environmental awareness officer from Westmeath County Council out to assess our progress in relation to our water flag application. He visited us in March, met with the teachers and the committee members. He listened to what we have done in our action plan, asked us questions and filled out an assessment document. We have submitted our paperwork and now we must wait and see what the outcome will be.
Good News: We have received the good news that our application was successful and we are due to receive our 2nd green flag for the Water theme. We will attend an awards ceremony at the end of May to receive this flag. Well done everybody for your contributions!!!
