This term we will continue to take part in the Mountain to Sea programme. We have one more trip planned to local environments before students come up with their own plans to take action to conserve the marine or freshwater or forest environment. Students will choose their own area of interest and work towards a showcase in Week 7 to share their projects and action taken.
Thanks to Auckland Council and the Ōrākei Local Board, who have enabled us to take part in the Mountain to Sea programme.
Week 4, Tuesday 16 May
In Week 1, students will choose which location they would like to visit. Teachers will try their best to give everyone thier first choice but this may not be possible due to restrictions on the number we can have at each site.
Visit to Selwyn Bush -inanga spawning egg check, stream planting and weeding (you will take part in all activities).
Stay at school and take part in rubbish related action projects which may include drain stencils, Litta traps and other action projects.
One student from St Thomas's School (and thier gaurdian) will be chosen to represent STS and snorkel around the Poor Knights Islands. The islands are located about an hour boat ride North East of Whangarei. The chosen student will spend the day snorkeling with approximately 25 other students from around the country that have taken part in the Mountain to Sea programme.
In Week 1, Teachers will gather expressions of interest from students. The Year 7 & 8 Teachers will then choose 1 representative from Year 7 or 8 who has shown great enthusiasm and engagement in the Mountain to Sea programme in Term 1.
Students must be confident swimmers as they will be snorkeling in the ocean.
This trip is not suited to anyone that gets seasick/motion sickness as the hour long boat ride can be quite choppy.
The trip will take place on Friday 12th of May (Week 3). The chosen student and their guardian will need to get themselves to Tutukaka Marina by 9:30am (approximately 3 and a half hours drive away).
