In Year 7 all students complete a 4 week topic called Skills, after which time they will be set. Students will then do 6 topics ranging from 16 to 24 lessons. Currently students have 4 x 50 minutes Science lessons per week.
Teaching Schedule
Dates are approximate only
B1: Organisms
C1: Matter
P1: Forces
B1: Systems
C2: Reactions
P2: Waves
Assessment
1) Each topic will have a written end of topic test which will take no more than 1 lesson. This will consist of a range of levelled questions from L3-L6 . It will be marked by the teacher and the NC level fed back to the students eg 3a, 5c etc. Students will then be asked to RAG (red, amber, green) rate each question in terms of how well they did and will be directed to complete self-improvement tasks for the questions they did less well on.
2) In 3 topics there will also be a Required Practical (C1, P1, B2). These are completed over 3 lessons and a homework as follows:
Lesson 1 – prediction, results table, start method (to be completed for homework)
Lesson 2 – experiment, graph
Lesson 3 – conclusion, evaluation
Each task has levelled Success Criteria printed on the worksheet so students can see what they need to do for the level they are working towards. After the RP is marked, an overall NC level will be fed back and students will then be directed to identify 3 areas they did less well on with ways to improve next time. They may also be asked to make improvements as part of the DIRT (directed improvement reflection time) process.
Attainment
Current levels will be reported to students every half term for comparison against target levels. These will be an average of end of topic test levels and required practical levels.
