Resources for Early Childhood Families Manhattan

Welcome to the Manhattan Early Childhood Family website. This site is hosted by the Division of Early Childhood Education (DECE) Manhattan Early Childhood Social Work Team. We provide a range of supports within early childhood programs located in District Schools, Pre-K Centers, New York City Early Education Centers (NYCEECS), and Charter Schools. We are here to support our families with:

  • Understanding and building skills that support children’s learning and development

  • Gaining strategies to support toileting, positive behaviors, multi-tasking, and self-care

  • Connecting to appropriate resources in support of needs and goals for caregivers and children

And much more!!

LET'S GET READY FOR 3K, PRE-K, and Kinder!

Virtual Event about Elementary Admissions

For families with children born in 2017, 2018, and 2019

This fall and winter we will be hosting multiple events online to walk you through 3-K, pre-K, and kindergarten admissions. At each event we will cover how to create and access your MySchools account, explore your school and program options, and get ready to apply. After the presentation, we will answer your questions. Please note that all events cover the same information, but each offers interpretation services in different languages. A captioned recording will also be posted on our website in December.

Information about accelerated learning for all through Brilliant NYC will be shared during separate public engagement events.

Below are news articles from various news sources related to early childhood development and child development in general.

Heritage Months

LUNAR NEW YEAR falls on February 1st, 2022. Lunar New Year, also sometimes known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is a 2-week holiday that celebrates luck, health, and reuniting with family. While it’s very widely celebrated, many kids might not know a lot about it.

The 15-day celebration honors ancestors and brings communities together with parades, activities, and customs believed to bring luck, prosperity, and happiness. It can vary based on local traditions, but festivities usually start with a family feast (called a reunion dinner) full of traditional foods, and end with a Lantern Festival. Family is a very important part of the holiday, so normally hundreds of millions of people travel to celebrate in their home

February is BLACK HISTORY MONTH. During Black History Month, communities across the country commemorate the history of people of African descent in America and pay tribute the many achievements of Black men and women. But perhaps the most important community members to get involved in this annual celebration? Our children.

Today's need for greater racial equity and inclusion requires kids to be exposed to diversity at a young age. To uplift all voices that have had an impact on our country, it is critical that Black history is studied and celebrated—not just in February, but throughout the entire year. African American history is American history, and when kids understand the fuller picture of history, it will also help them understand the fuller picture of today.
