(reminder: Make sure you are logged into your Chrome browser with your school account )
On this website you will see a few "Level Up" options which are for those who are comfortable with extending their learning. No one is required to Level Up. It is just enrichment and an added level of fun for those who are interested.
Start at the top and work your way down. Each heading (bold, underlined, and purple) is a concept and will have a link to a video for you to watch. The linked video will have steps that teach you about each concept. Some sections have additional resources and videos which are underlined. The words and phrases that are underlined mean that will link to some additional resources.
After you view the Google Classroom 101 overview video, go to the "Create a New Class" below. Watch the video linked in purple, then return to this
Now you will create a "practice" class in Google Classroom to use as you learn new skills. Use the video you just watched that says "Create a New Class" in purple so you know how to create your practice class so you can learn along with the tutorials. I will refer to your new Google Classroom as "your Practice Class" from now on. No one will be able to see your Google Classroom unless YOU add a co-teacher or if you add students. You will NOT add any students to this Practice Class. It is okay for you to make mistakes in your Practice Class. You are actually encouraged to make mistakes and learn from them.
Once you create your Practice Class, return to THIS website "Google Classroom: 101" on the Learn tab, and go to the next heading below to Customize Your Heading.
FYI: At the very end of this website page, you will add Leanne Knight to your Practice Class as a co-teacher (directions will come later when you have worked on your Practice Class). Adding Leanne as a co-teacher is how you will "turn your work in" to Leanne.
Make your header more aesthetically pleasing in your Practice Class. (Level Up: Make your own! Alice Keeler's quick lesson. Step by Step with Tammy Whitaker. Last but certainly not least, you can create an animated header for Google Classroom.)
In your Practice Class in Google Classroom, create a simple assignment and a topic. (Think back to our Covid quarantine time and post a similar assignment.) Another way to create a Topic.

This is how you and your students navigate from the main Google Classroom dashboard to a class and back to the dashboard.
In your Practice Class, look through your settings and decide how you want your class to be set up. You can always update and change these setting at anytime.
How are you going to have your students join your "real" Google Classroom (not the practice one) when you begin using this tool with your students? (More information on Guardian Summaries.)
Find a simple quiz you have used with students and create a Quiz in your Practice Class. (Additional help on creating a quiz using Forms.) Level Up: Start with a Google Form (from Google Drive) and create a quiz you can use the first six weeks of the 2020-2021 school year.
When you are ready to use Google Classroom in the Fall and your class list is available in Renweb, tell Leanne to link your Google Classroom Class to Renweb when you are ready to begin grading. Once that is done, you can sync your assignment grades to your Renweb grade book. Let Leanne know so she can connect your Google Classroom to your Renweb Class. Leanne will not connect a Google Classroom to Renweb until you tell her to connect them. After the "bridge" between Renweb and Classroom has been created, you can follow these directions to sync your grades into Renweb.
Are you one of the teachers who says, "My kids can't possibly handle the Stream Page." If you said that, then you are probably right because students need to be TAUGHT how to behave appropriately online. Students are taught the expectations of their regular classroom. Students need to be taught how to behave and socialize within Google Classroom, also. Google Classroom allows for a wonderful opportunity to teach this aspect of digital citizenship. Here are just a few examples of lessons you could use to help your students learn appropriate ways to speak to each other online. These lessons are on Common Sense Media so you will need to create a free teacher account, if you have not already created one.
Engaging Digital Citizenship (Instead of using Schoology as stated in the lesson, use your Google Classroom Stream Page)
Consider how Announcements would be beneficial for at home eLearning. Create an announcement in your Practice Class.
Consider how Class Comments on an assignment would benefit the teacher and the students during eLearning.
This is how you can manage the number of emails you receive from Classroom notifying you of every change. Some notifications are important and others just bog down your email inbox.
Consider the differences between a "material" and an "assignment"
Post a material in your Practice Class using a Topic.

HIGHLY recommend using a numbering system when naming assignments in Google Classroom
In your Practice Class, try out ways you can utilize assignments. Think of eLearning and practice posting a few assignments you used in Spring 2020.
"Questions" are a great way to do an exit ticket.
Post a multiple choice question and another short answer question to your Practice Class.
You are now going to add Leanne Knight as your co-teacher in Google Classroom as your way of show her your work.
Email Leanne Knight when you added her since she has her notification turned off :-)

Pro tip: Hide Classwork notifications in Classroom Settings! This allows only for announcements in the Stream.
