Stride Interpreting serves the Kansas City community as an interpreting agency, committed to bridging communication gaps through professional and reliable interpreting services. Beyond providing crucial access to communication, Stride Interpreting is deeply invested in cultivating the next generation of skilled interpreters. We take direct action to achieve this by strategically coordinating comprehensive internship programs. These programs offer emerging interpreters hands-on experience, allowing them to interpret alongside certified professionals and gain the practical skills necessary to confidently pursue and achieve their interpreting certifications. Our purpose is not only to meet the immediate needs for interpreting services but also to ensure a strong and capable future for the profession.
Recognizing that a thriving interpreting community extends beyond formal training and service provision, Stride Interpreting proudly established These Hands as a vital initiative. These Hands takes purposeful action to foster a robust and interconnected network for interpreters. We actively build community through the creation and support of Affinity Groups, providing dedicated spaces where interpreters with shared identities or interests can connect, support one another, and collectively address unique challenges and opportunities within the field. Furthermore, These Hands actively organizes engaging social events, creating informal settings for networking, camaraderie, and the strengthening of professional relationships. We also offer valuable Professional Development opportunities, equipping interpreters with the latest skills, knowledge, and resources needed to excel in their careers and adapt to the evolving landscape of the interpreting profession.
The core purpose of These Hands, operating as an integral part of Stride Interpreting's broader vision, is to empower interpreters at every stage of their journey. By taking concrete strides to build supportive networks, facilitate meaningful connections, and provide accessible avenues for professional growth, we aim to elevate the interpreting profession as a whole and, ultimately, expand equitable communication access for all members of our diverse community.
Hi, I’m Jasmine Velasco! I am thrilled to be a part of the These Hands team. I've been interpreting since 2018 and I’m a firm believer in lifelong learning, regularly diving into new literature and workshops to sharpen my craft. Currently, I’m a Graduate student at the University of North Florida specializing in Interpreting Pedagogy. For me, interpreting is about more than just words—it’s about ensuring equitable communication access for everyone and building the strong professional networks that keep our interpreting community thriving.
Hello everyone! I’m Lisa Wirken. I’m so excited to be part of These Hands. Interpreting has been such a meaningful part of my life over the past 15 years in Kansas City, shaping not only my career but also my sense of community. One of the things I love most about this work is the way it brings people together and fosters deeper connections. Outside of interpreting, life has been a whirlwind with my toddler keeping me on my toes! Parenthood has given me a new perspective on growth, learning, and the importance of lifting up those around us. I’m looking forward to continuing to learn, connect, and support this amazing community.
Hey y'all! I’m Stephanie Drever and I am so happy to be a part of These Hands and our amazing Affinity groups. I live in Belton, MO and have been interpreting since 2023. I’m very excited for our New and Emerging interpreters group! I set this up in the hopes to create a safe space, so that students who are graduating soon, those who have recently graduated and those who are new working interpreters can all come together. We have shared experiences and we all need support. That’s what this group is for.
