- Oroville Band Festival for Friday April 13th 9am to 11am at the State Theater
This is during school time. The reason for that, is the awesome team at STAGE is letting us use the theater for FREE that morning! We will need drivers for that (if you are able to, please let me know and how many seats). This is a great opportunity to see the High School band.
ALSO, the next day will be the DREAM BIG Festival which is a concert that benefits OUR students! We will sell tickets for that event, for $10. WE GET TO KEEP ALL OF THE $10. So by buying a ticket, you're basically giving the STREAM music program $10... We will likely only have about 50 available, so those will be first come first served. We will play the same music for both days.
- DREAM BIG Festival is Saturday April 14th at approx 3pm to 5pm at the State Theater.
There will be more info, permission slips, and more solid times coming very soon. I just wanted to let you know of the scheduling now, as we are about a month away from this awesome event over 2 days. Thanks again, please email with any comments/questions/concerns as always!
On April 6th the North State Symphony will be here to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the State Theater. They are playing the music of John Williams! Star Wars, Indiana Jones… etc. They are also offering a special interactive time with students including free pizza for band students at 3pm. Since this is during our Spring break parents must provide transportation to and from the event. I will need to have a head count so please email to confirm attendance. An email will work too. The full concert will be at 7:30pm. You can purchase tickets here for the evening full performance.

Thank you for considering this opportunity! Free mini-concert, free pizza, extra credit. Seems like a good deal to me!
AN UPDATE ON GRADES - This week I am finishing up grades for music class. I have formalized the system this trimester. The kids are very aware of the new system, we talk of it daily. I thought I'd let you know the updates as well:
Letters are negative. A student earns 3 different kinds of letters: S (sick and not playing, without a note from home), P (for not participating through playing or distracting others from being able to participate), and I (for forgetting their instrument to play at school, which means they can't play with the group and participate). These 3 letters are ways of letting students know their progress. After 5 letters, their grade is dropped a full grade (after 5 letters, an A becomes a B and so on). They can get letters erased by showing up to performances, or for going the extra mile.
If you have any questions let me know, and you can ask them more about the system, they know all about it and are updated on their progress as much as they wish.
Thanks for supporting their education through music! We at STREAM really believe it is valuable to their brain and motor skill development. This youtube video sums it up well (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0JKCYZ8hng)

Vision for the STREAM Band Program:
Band is a part of our program everyday at STREAM. The "A" in STREAM is for "Arts" and we a fortunate to have a program which values music. Students are graded in band, but not simply on their musical ability. Their participation, improvement and basic musical skills are all considered as a part of their grade.
Advanced Band is made up our 7th and 8th grade students. Just like any subject, when a student is falling behind, we make an attempt to help them to catch up and improve their skills. We have reserved some time on Fridays for just this. Teachers are aware and are making sure no core instruction will be missed during this block of time. Some students will be pulled in small groups, but not necessarily every week.
As students who are new to band or need extra help work to improve their music skills, they will enjoy the whole band reversals and performances more and more.
Band is not optional for our middle-school students at STREAM. Our small school cannot provide additional electives during band time. There are different electives offered during Genius Hour which are not related music.
I hope our STREAM families can appreciate the unique offerings of our school. All students can benefit from a rich understanding and appreciation of music and the arts. We want to make our music time as educational and enjoyable as possible for all students, regardless of their natural music ability and other talents.
