Research has shown more reading equals higher achievement. Therefore, your child's homework is to read 20 minutes every night. I encourage you to read TO your child, WITH your child, and have your child read independently. Your child will be asked to share details about what they read.
A list of sight words, also known as "high frequency or snap words " will be sent home as new words are introduced. It is very important that your child practice reading these words nightly. It will greatly help their reading. These are words most commonly seen in our stories and cannot be sounded out. By the end of the year, first graders are expected to read 167 high frequency words.
It is also important to practice addition and subtraction facts to ten, in addition to counting from a random number. Students are expected to count up to 120 by year end.
I appreciate all that you do to help your child become a lifelong learner.
