Hi! I'm Matthew Nelson and I make podcasts: The deep-dive, serialized, narrative kind, but also quick-turn, weekly and video formats.
For a long time I was the Supervising Producer of Gimlet Media’s acclaimed hip hop anthology series, Mogul. The show was lauded by The New Yorker as "essential listening," Time Magazine dubbed it "the best of the best," and NPR called the show "the first major foray into narrative storytelling for a hip-hop podcast.” I made three seasons of Mogul and contributed to every element of the production process: research, reporting, recording, managing production, leading a team, writing scripts, helping craft sound design, and story editing.
After Mogul, I became the Supervising Producer for the true-crime anthology series, Conviction. During this time, I reported on how the American justice system works (and, in turn, how it fails) as well as heists, kidnaps, murders, and more.
I also created and developed the popular soccer podcast, We Came to Win, and hosted and reported The Takedown -- a story about a UFC fighter who pulled off the biggest cash robbery in history -- for Crime Show.
Most recently, I make the hit weekly music show One Song for Hartbeat (ranked by The Atlantic as one of the 50 best shows of 2023 and a Signal Award winner), I wrote, reported, and executive-produced the #1 true crime podcast Criminal Attorney for Wondery, and I made Curse Breakers, a show about the Boston Red Sox, for the Boston Globe.
I'm also the founder of Stramash Media, a production company specializing in video podcasts, and audio-first, high-touch, sound-rich podcasts. Stramash is an old Scots word that means to make noise or a racket. I'd love to make a racket with you. Reach me here: matthew@stramashmedia.net
