Sight Words

Often times families ask what sight words their second grader should be practicing at home. On this page, I will post sight words that can be practiced at home along with fun ideas for practicing them! Remember, everyone works at their own pace. Keep practicing and they will get easier! These should be practiced until they can be read automatically.

FUN WAYS TO PRACTICE:

-White board and dry erase markers

-Flashcards

-Sight word tic-tac-toe or BINGO

-Leap Frog or Hopscotch (student reads each word they hop on)

-Writing with sidewalk chalk

-Making words with Play-doh

-Building words with magnets

-Looking for words around the house or in magazines/newspapers/books

-Word hunts (Clues are given so student can find words placed around the house on cards. This is a lot of fun with a flashlight!)

-"Guess My Word" (clues are given regarding how many letters are in the word, what it starts with, rhymes with, looks like, etc.)

-Sight Word Soup (Words are written on noodles and students can mix them up, scoop them out, and read/write them)
