SPHS requires 1.0 credits of fine art for graduation

This credit can be taken anytime during high school (9-12), and students may take more than 1.0 art credit.

Concert Band: FAB-100S0 (1 credit)

Grades 9-12, Prerequisite: Previous band experience

This course is offered to advanced high school instrumentalists. The concert band rehearses daily and plays advanced levels of music in all styles. Other units of study include marching band, color guard and pep band, which performs at various athletic events during the fall and winter sports seasons. In addition to concerts, the Concert Band performs at the Section Large Group Contest. Concert band members will have periodic lessons and/or sectionals. Members are encouraged to participate in solo and ensemble contest during the second semester.

Varsity Choir: FAR-100S0 (1 credit)

Grade 9, no prerequisite

This course is offered to students in grade 9 who want to learn choral music and who want to apply that knowledge through the performance of quality choral music. Students will study and perform literature of varying historical and musical styles and levels of technical difficulty. Choir members will receive individual voice instruction in addition to their daily rehearsal. An important goal in this course is for students to become musically literate by studying the symbolic language of music, its notation. Students will be exposed to the art of music through various means.

Saints Chorale: FAR-100So (1 credit)

Grade 10, no prerequisite

This course is offered to students who want to learn choral music and who want to apply that knowledge through the performance of quality choral music. Students will study and perform literature of varying historical and musical styles and levels of technical difficulty. Choir members will receive individual voice instruction in addition to their daily rehearsal. An important goal in this course is for students to become musically literate by studying the symbolic language of music, its notation. Students will be exposed to the art of music through many ways including performances by other high school choirs, the opportunity to work with master teachers in clinics and festivals and by performing as soloists and/or in small ensembles at the Minnesota State High School League contest.

Concert Choir: FAR-120S0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisite: Varsity choir,
Saints chorale or vocal audition

This course of study is open to advanced music students who want to learn choral music and who want to apply that knowledge through the performance of quality choral music. Students will study and perform literature of varying historical and musical styles and levels of technical difficulty. All senior high choir members will receive individual voice instruction in addition to their daily rehearsals. An important goal in this course is for students to become musically literate by studying the symbolic language of music, its notation. Students will be exposed to the art of music through many ways including performances by other high school choirs, the opportunity to work with master teachers in clinics and festivals and by performing as soloists and/or in small ensembles at the Minnesota State High School League contest.

Art Concepts: FAV-110B0 (1 credit)

Grades 9-12, no prerequisites

This course is perfect for the student looking to improve their art skills. You will learn how to generate original ideas and explore creative problem solving. Exploring different styles and functions of art and practicing applying the elements and principles of design will be part of the art making experience. You will learn techniques to strengthen and develop your drawing skills. Projects will be created in a variety of art media including: Drawing, Acrylic Painting, Collage, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Weaving.

Two-Dimensional (2D) Art: FAV-130B0 (1 credit)

Grades 9-12, no prerequisites

Students will use a variety of two-dimensional media to explore concepts of composition, contour, shading, still life, figure drawing, portrait, landscape depth and perspective. The coursework will emphasize creating original pieces in an encouraging and supportive environment. Art history and analysis will also be integrated throughout the course.

Three-Dimensional (3D) Art: FAV-140B0 (1 credit)

Grades 9-12, no prerequisites

Students will have experiences in additive and subtractive sculpture and mold making. Students will learn how to make handbuilt and wheel thrown pottery. The coursework will emphasize creating original pieces in an encouraging and supportive environment. Art history and art analysis will also be integrated throughout the course.
