In the Health Science Career Cluster you can prepare for a career that promotes health, wellness and diagnosis, and treats injuries and diseases. Some careers involve working directly with people, while others involve research into diseases or collecting and formatting data and information.

Psychology: SSP-100B0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, no prerequisite

Psychology is an introduction to the science of psychology. Topics covered in the course include: human growth and development; personality theory; psychological principles of learning and thinking; perception, motivation, and emotion; frustration and stress; psychological disorders and their treatment; principles of social psychology.

Weights & Wellness: PEE-110B0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisites: Phy Ed 9 and Phy Ed 10

In this course students will learn about what makes them fit. They will study and utilize various fitness assessments and then develop a program to improve/maintain their own level of fitness/wellness. The course will include aerobic conditioning, weight training, flexibility, strength training, body composition, assessment and charting. The course is not designed as a substitute for ninth or tenth grade physical education. Students taking this course should be interested in improving their health, overall fitness, and performance while learning how to maintain their established program. Students must be self-motivated and self-directed. Have fun and be fit.

Anatomy & Physiology Comparative: SCA-100B0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisite: B or above in Biology

A survey course to compare and contrast the body systems of common vertebrates including, but not limited to: fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Explorations of functions of the primary organs and their related systems will be central to the course. Lab safety techniques will be emphasized and a variety of dissections will be performed. Significant focus will be given to scientific terminology and the physiology of various systems.

Science of Mindset & Nutrition: SCE-100B0 (1 credit)

Students will explore the power of emotional intelligence and how it impacts confidence, decision making, and overall mental health. This course will dive into the detailed science of the brain, sleep, food, and neurotransmitters. Students will do weekly journals, conduct investigations, and read research articles. Students will end the course with a capstone research project on a topic they choose with guidance from their instructor. *Run opposite years to Biotech

MSU PSY 101: Introduction to Psychological Sciences: SSPC400B0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisite: Admission to MSU

Introduction to Psychological Sciences is offered in cooperation with Minnesota State University, Mankato Concurrent Enrollment Program. This course is designed to provide a thorough introduction to the broad spectrum of theories and applications that make up the field of psychology. Students will be encouraged to think critically about psychological issues and apply to your own life, the world and hypothesize why humans behave the way they do.

MSU Health & The Environment: PEHC400B0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisite: Admission to MSU

This course is designed to introduce the wellness concept, encouraging development of physical, mental, social, and environmental health of the individual. The course ultimately fosters decision-making through a variety of instructional strategies.

Emergency Responder: HSHY210S0 (1 credit)

Grades 10-12, Prerequisites: Students in grade 10 must have 3.0 GPA.
*Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Credential is earned

The Emergency Medical Responder course prepares the EMR student to provide prehospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and responsibilities of EMRs, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, and special considerations for working in the prehospital setting. This course meets or exceeds the guidelines established by the United States Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Health.

SCC Health Care Core Foundations: HSHY100S0 (1 credit)

This course will focus on the requirements needed by healthcare professionals to effectively work in a variety of healthcare settings and explore workplace skills such as accountability and responsibility, workplace behavior, approaches to assist clients, and expectations of teams and team members. This course provides a framework for healthcare workers to interact with diverse clients and staff, including belief systems, cultural practices, and respect and sensitivity to cultural, gender, and age issues. Identifying elements of communication and how those elements can develop into effective communication within the healthcare setting is a key focus, as well as learning when and how to utilize those skills in challenging situations. Health care ethics will be addressed and target ethical decision-making and personal and professional values. Legal issues in healthcare will round out the course, concentrating on healthcare laws and social media in healthcare. Healthcare safety and standards precautions will be incorporated, as well as personal wellness for the healthcare professional. This course was designed as a part of the Minnesota Health Care Core Curriculum.

SCC Medical Terminology: HSHY400S0 (1 credit)

This course is an introduction to the language of medicine that is used in the health care profession. The student will learn to spell, pronounce, define, and interpret medical terminology related to body structure, disease, diagnosis, and treatment.

Nursing Assistant (CNA): HSHY200S0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisites: B in Health Care Core Foundations
*Nursing Assistant Registry (NAR) Credential is earned

This course meets federal and state criteria for eligibility to take the state test to become a NA-R. It introduces concepts of basic human needs, the health/illness continuum and focuses on preparing the student to safely perform basic nursing skills needed to function as a Nursing Assistant. This course is an 80-hour curriculum developed by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Students participate in online curriculum studies, laboratory skills and gain hands-on experience during their clinical rotation. Students that successfully complete this course qualify for admittance to the Competency Evaluation at an approved Minnesota Technical College test site.

Biotechnology: SCT-200B0 (1 credit)

Grades 11-12, Prerequisite: Successful completion of Physical Science & Biology. Recommended B in Biology.

This course designed to give students a comprehensive introduction to the scientific concepts and laboratory research techniques currently used in the field of biotechnology. Students attain knowledge about the field of biotechnology and deeper understanding of the biological concepts used. In addition, students develop the laboratory, critical thinking, and communication skills currently used in the biotechnology industry. Furthermore, students will explore and evaluate career opportunities in the field of biotechnology through extensive readings, laboratory experiments, class discussions, research projects, guest speakers, and field trips. Students will learn the basic biological and chemical processes of cell, tissues, and organisms. They will also learn the historical experiments that led to the central dogma of molecular biology and understand the basic processes of DNA replication, transcription and translation. Finally, they will be led through advanced techniques of recombinant DNA technologies that will prepare them for collegiate biology and biochemistry courses.
