7th Graders will explore a close reading of a variety of novels, poems, plays, and short stories during their literature classes.
Monday - Friday 9:40 - 10:22
Vocabulary, literary themes, plot structure, literary elements, character development and analysis, author's craft, and making connections between literature, history, culture, and our own personal experiences
Each quarter of the school year, students are expected to read a minimum of 2 books at their independent reading level AND complete an AR Quiz for each. Students will be given time to read their books for AR in class on Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays. Students will also be provided the opportunity to take the AR Quizzes in class.
Our major novel study this year will be Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Through the study of this incredible piece of historical fiction, we will be able to explore life in the rural south during the 1930's, family values, sharecropping, racial prejudice, and the Jim Crow laws. Bible studies related to key themes will also be interwoven into our literary discussions. We will read this novel as it was written - which includes a description of a lynch mob, as well as the use of the "n" word. This will ALWAYS be done in a respectful and gentle manner with a Christ-like love and focus. Learning from past wrongs leads us to a better future!
Most of the reading will be done during class time. Students will each be receiving his/her own personal copy of the book. Parents are welcome to read along with us and continue the discussions at home. Please let Mrs. Sullivan know if you will be joining us in our novel study and she will be sure to keep you up-to-date on our progress.
