6th Grade- Room 707

Theology, English Language Arts, and Social Studies

Welcome! I am Mrs. Wendy Lomano and I teach 6th Grade Theology, English Language Arts, and Social Studies at St. Paul School. I have been involved in education and teaching since 2002. I hold a bachelor's degree in English and Journalism from Bowling Green State University, a Master of Arts in Teaching Middle Childhood Language Arts and Social Studies (Grades 4-9) from Otterbein University, and I am endorsed to teach 4th-6th grade math and science. I have had 3 years of religious education training through Franciscan University. Before joining SPS in 2021, I taught 6th grade ELA and Social Studies, 4th grade ELA and Social Studies, and 4th grade self-contained (all subjects) in Columbus.

My husband, Rocky, and I live in Westerville. We have been active members of St. Paul Church since 1998, when we both were Baptized after going through the RCIA process. Rocky is a partially-retired civil engineer and land surveyor, is involved in the Westerville Knights of Columbus Council, and volunteers with the USO. We have two sons who attended St. Paul School; our oldest is a Navy veteran, and his brother is a Marine veteran. Because of our sons' military service, I am a member of the Buckeye Chapter 9 Blue Star Moms. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, gardening, and reading; in fact, I spend so much time on those activities that I rarely watch television or movies (we do not have cable). I read more than 10 books this past summer!

Some of my favorite things are books, of course, but I do not have an Amazon account (weird, huh?). Instead, I shop at Half Price Books. I also love Ferrero Rocher hazelnut chocolates, anything vanilla or coconut scented, Skechers, Jimmy John's, Panera, Carrabba's, Bob Evan's, Chipotle, Bath and Body Works, and Village Thrift.

My motto is, "Learn something new every day," and I aim to create life-long learners. Sixth grade is a year of maturation for students: Throughout this year, students become increasingly responsible for their learning, behavior, and education. They are well on their way to becoming well-rounded, caring, temperate, just, and faithful Catholic adults.

6th Grade Theology

This year, we will use the Word of Life curriculum from the Augustine Institute for sixth-grade Theology. Our focus is "The Word of God: Jesus Christ and Sacred Scripture." Students will understand the Word of God and His plan for us; we will learn about the beginning of God's people here on earth, with a focus on the Old Testament and how the prophets foretold Christ's life and sacrifice to bring God's people salvation from sin. We will explore the Liturgy during Advent, Epiphany, and the Lenten and Easter seasons. Additionally, we will delve into our purpose and identity, as physical beings created by God, as we study the Theology of the Body. Our learning is Christ-centered and adheres to the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

6th Grade English Language Arts

During our English Language Arts classes, we read every day from a variety of texts, including the Bible, fiction, nonfiction, magazines, poetry, and more. Additionally, we read whole class novels and discuss our understandings and how they relate to Biblical values, concepts, and our Catholic faith, as well as how we can apply these ideas to our own lives. We build learning through discussions, investigative and collaborative projects, publishing our writing, and presentations. Students write each day about numerous topics, including current events, and curriculum content (religion, math, science, and social studies), as well as compose argumentative essays, informational research projects, and both fiction and nonfiction narratives.

6th Grade Social Studies

Sixth-grade social studies covers some familiar concepts, as well as new ones: we review maps, geographic regions, and world geography and how they impact humans (and vice versa!), timelines (multi-tiered and BC/BCE), early humans, early civilizations, world religions, government, economics, and personal finance.  We will connect our social studies learning with our understanding that everything is part of God's plan for creation. Social studies concepts will be integrated into some of our Language Arts non-fiction standards.

Families and Parents

I believe parents and families are a child's first educators; you are my partners in your child's learning this year.

During the school year, several resources are available to help you stay up-to-date regarding assignments, homework, and due dates. These resources include Google Classroom (parents may receive an invitation to enable you to check your child's account), Agenda Docs, and student planners. FACTS information system (interims and quarterly progress reports) will also be used this year; more information will be forthcoming regarding FACTS.

Each Friday, we will send a blue Assessment Portfolio home; the folder will have any graded tests, quizzes, or other work students have completed in the past week. A listing of assessed work will be included; please have your student log in on his or her  Chromebook to show you any online assessments/grades. Sign the assessment log and return everything to school in the blue folder on Monday.

Lastly, I send out a weekly Friday email to parents with information about this past week's learning and what to expect in the coming week. You can also keep informed about what is going on at school by reading the weekly RAM Report the school emails parents on Tuesdays.

I encourage you to make use of these information resources to ensure your child is staying on top of their academic responsibilities and so that you are aware of events here at school and at St. Paul parish.

2024-25 Parent/Student Handbook

Please ensure you and your student(s) have thoroughly read the updated 2024-25 Parent/Student Handbook.

There are many updates of which you need to be aware.

All students are to have read and discussed with parents the handbook and what is required of them as students here at SPS.
