Hello, my name is Nancy Beverage and I am the librarian for all the students at St. Paul. I am a Westerville native having been born and raised here. After earning my B.A. degree in Educational Media with K-12 certification from Ohio Dominican College (now University), I worked for several years at the Westerville Public Library. While I was working on my Masters in Library Science from Kent State University, I was blessed to become the full-time librarian here at St. Paul in the fall of 1986.
I have seen many changes through the years as the school has grown. Along with the students, I am constantly learning and doing new things with technology as it continues to evolve. (When I first came, the Apple IIe was all the rage.) One of the things that has remained constant is the love of reading that the students have, whether reading from a book or an e-book, or listening to an audio-book.
My goals as the librarian at St. Paul are to help guide the child into becoming a life-long reader and learner as well as to be a good disciple of Christ.
From grades K - 6, the students have weekly classes with me as I introduce them to authors and genres. I also collaborate with the classroom teachers so as to connect some of the library lessons with the classroom lessons. The students have fun doing fairy tales and poetry with Reader's Theater and, of course, lessons on how to use library materials and how to locate them.
For grades 7 - 8, they will come for one quarter as a class plus come at other times with their Language Arts teachers. Lessons are taught on how to do research as well as using various specialized websites, such as InfOhio.org. I also have a club called Battle of the Books for those students who love to read and it allows them to show off their prowess in recalling the information from the books they read while competing against other Diocesan schools.
In my own life I (of course) love to read. Historical mysteries are my favorites. I am also a huge Star Trek fan. (Live long and prosper!) Traveling feeds my love of history, whether it is somewhere close such as in Ohio or off in far-away lands. While I travel, friends take care of my two cats.
If you have an interest in volunteering in the library, please let my aide, Mrs. Janet Ackley, know. (jackley@stpaulk-8.org) Volunteering is a great way of meeting new people as well as getting to know your child's classmates.
