Hi! My name is Mary DeGenova and I am a 2nd grade teacher at St. Paul School. I started teaching at St. Paul School in 1998, teaching 7th and 8th grade for 11 years and then 3rd grade for 9 years. I have taught 1st and 3rd grade at other schools prior to coming to St. Paul.
I attended Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where I earned a bachelor degree in Elementary Education in 1994. I am certified to teach grades 1-8. A few years later, I went back to school and earned my Masters Degree in the Art of Teaching through Marygrove College in Michigan in 2002.
When you walk into my classroom, you will notice a comfortable space where the children are encouraged to learn how and where they work best. Many subjects are differentiated to the students’ learning style and level daily in the classroom. I believe in working with students in small groups encouraging them to use the gifts God has given them to do their best and try their hardest, allowing the students opportunities to explore their learning through partner learning, and encouraging them to become independent learners. Challenging students to push their learning further is always a goal in my class. I am blessed to work in a school where God is the focus of our day.
I live in Sunbury and am a parishioner at St. John Neumann. One of my favorite places around Central Ohio is the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. My favorite college team is Ohio University Bobcats! Hiking, kayaking and relaxing around a campfire are some activities my family and I enjoy doing together. 80's music, alternate indie, and pop music, long walks, and reading a good mystery are activities that help me relax.
2nd grade is an exciting year with the students receiving First Reconciliation and First Communion. Some fun activities we complete in 2nd grade are “traveling around the world” learning about different cultures, weather, and the enivronment. Students also begin to learn how to research on their own, and complete a fun Fairy Tales project and presentation. STEAM and PBLs are incorporated into our lessons.
I communicate to parents through email and our weekly newsletter.
I am thankful every day to be part of the St. Paul School community.
