ELL (English Language Learner) students are those who benefit from additional English language support to succeed in an academic setting. This may include students who are new to an English-speaking school and are developing foundational language skills, as well as those who are nearing proficiency but still require targeted support to refine their academic language abilities. Our goal is to help ELL students build confidence, improve fluency, and fully engage in their learning experience.
ELL students are identified through a comprehensive assessment process that evaluates their English language proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This includes reviewing language background, teacher observations, and standardized assessments such as NWEA MAP, Dibels, and WIDA.
Our SPELL program provides tailored language support to help students thrive in an English-speaking academic environment. Support is offered through both co-teaching and pull-out models:
Co-Teaching: Each homeroom has a dedicated SPELL co-teacher who works alongside classroom teachers to enhance students' language development during academic lessons.
Pull-out Support: Some students receive targeted instruction in small groups, focusing on their specific language goals to build confidence and fluency.
Through this approach, we ensure that every student receives the guidance they need to succeed in both language and academics.
