Updated Poster for Teachers on Presenting American Indian Standards

In 2019, SPPS created the Indigenous TOSA position to be a cultural leader with an indigenous perspective and knowledge of curriculum writing, standards, and assessments. This position is rare throughout the state and has helped bridge the gap of achievement for our American Indian students in the district.

The Indigenous TOSAs have helped to create Indigenous book lists by Indigenous authors and have created lesson plans to meet state standards. The information can be found on the Indigenous Integration web page of SPPS’ website. The Indigenous TOSAs were also able to get Indigenous Book class sets to all of the elementary and middle schools.  The high schools have received books too. Also, the Indigenous TOSAs continue to work closely with the Social Studies department to update standards, lessons, and resources.

• Learning from Place: We recognize the importance of learning from the place we live. We formally acknowledge the Dakota and Anishinaabe peoples as the traditional stewards of this land, which was once their sovereign territory. This acknowledgement informs our educational mission.
