Art Activism will focus on social change for the betterment of humanity and our society through visual art. Artistic and Activism combines the creative power of visual art to move us emotionally with the strategic planning of activism necessary to bring about social change. Socially minded artists, their art, and issues throghout time, such as discrimination, racism, political activism, the criminal justice system, violence, and political disenfranchisement will be studied.

Drawing / Cartooning, Advanced is a one-semester course (.5 credit), students continue to demonstrate their understanding of the artistic process, formal organization, and drawing techniques as it pertains to cartoons. The students will also demonstrate the ability to interpret and evaluate complex works of art including a variety of cartoon genres. Students are encouraged to experiment with subject matter as well as materials, and create artworks that reflect sensitivity, commitment, and an understanding of aesthetic considerations with an emphasis on cartooning.

This course is designed for students in grades 9-12 who are enrolling in a high school art course for the first time. This course provides a variety of experiences that build on the concepts, techniques, and use of media introduced in the middle school program. Generally laboratory in nature, Introduction to Visual Arts explores and gives experience in two-dimensional (drawing, painting, printmaking) and three-dimensional (sculpture, ceramics, textiles) formats and integrates art history, design principles, and aesthetic criticism and response.

Media Arts will use technology such as recording devices, computers, and software to create original art. This course introduces students to media arts history, analyzes different types of media art, and gives students a hands on experience in audio/recording, video creation, and basic cartooning and animation through extensive use of computer technology. The course will also include digital photography.

Students in this course will learn both two dimensional and three dimensional design using a variety of art media. Students will learn about and use elements and principles of design to create unique art works. Students will learn both two dimensional and three dimensional design techniques. Students will explore the history of mixed media in the arts.

Teachers will choose one of the cultures ( Europe, Africa, Asia, etc.) to explore throughout the term. This course introduces the student to the skills, vocabulary, and techniques necessary to understand the cultures art and history. Students will learn basic clay, drawing, poetry, and movement techniques connected to the culture. While the students consider the different stages of development of their art, they will also apply the elements and principles of design and craftwork to their creations.
