Strength & fitness

Preferably taken 9th grade

This course is designed to help improve muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of fitness training principles, proper exercise technique/form, and human anatomy, they will then apply this knowledge in developing personal fitness goals and exercise plans. The flexibility of the online school allows students to join live workouts during class time, or to exercise on their own schedule.

The objective of Individual and Community Health Education is to give students the opportunity to learn health behaviors and concepts related to health science to enhance the overall health and well being of individuals and our respective communities. Listed below are the 8 National Health Education Standards and SPPS Health Education Power Standards, which will be the focus of this course. The course will provide students with knowledge, attitudes, and skills to make healthy decisions for life-long health and wellness. Our goal is to explore how individual choice can impact our community and society as a whole. This semester course fulfills the St. Paul graduation requirement for health education.

Health After High School Course Description

Health After High School

This course will focus on actionable health skills that promote independence, disease prevention, life satisfaction, and health literacy throughout the lifespan. Course topics will focus on healthy habit-building in areas such as time management, physical activity, intuitive nutrition, and stress management, with an emphasis on prevention of chronic health conditions in different phases of life. Students will also learn how to access healthcare resources in their communities.

stress management

This semester-long elective is an extensive, comprehensive workshop course designed around a holistic approach to stress management that incorporates relaxation techniques and coping skills with the intention to prevent and/or alleviate the physical symptoms of stress and promote overall balance.

In this course, students will:

• Participate in multiple relaxation and coping techniques

• Analyze the mind-body connection of stress and disease

• Describe the body’s physiological stress response

• Learn to recognize their unique stress response

• Maintain a weekly stress journal, focusing on personal stressors and effective coping strategies

• Create a personal stress management plan
