The Career and Technical Education department offers construction technology, basic woodworking, and CAD (computer aided design) drafting classes, Engineering, Aviation, and many career focused classes. Johnson has the largest number of CTE licensed teachers at any SPPS high school. These teachers can access some Perkins funding for field trips, equipment and professional development. These courses and instructors are able to offer a rich and relevant experience to their students. They truly get to experience the real world.
In 2022, 89% of Minnesota postsecondary CTE concentrators were employed, had pursued further education, or had joined the military or Peace Corps after program completion.
All ninth grade students will take PLTW Essentials of Engineering taught by a CTE teacher. In tenth grade they may choose their Career Pathway (Aerospace and Engineering, Science and Medical, Education and Community Justice, or Business and Communication). Students will take an intro course taught by a CTE teacher. Students can continue their CTE education no matter what Career Pathway they wish to pursue.
