Hmong Level 1

Course Length: Two Semesters (Year Long)

This course introduces the basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through thematically designed units. Students will learn the basic Hmong alphabet, phonetics, grammar, and sentence structure. Themes include identity and self, family, daily and leisure activities, folk stories, and clothing. Students will explore the history, culture, traditions, and beliefs of the Hmong through these thematic units.

Through the ACTFL standards, students will develop language skills to interact and communicate effectively in multilingual communities. We will focus on five goal areas, known as the five C’s: Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities.

For our unit on clothing, we learned how to sing a Hmong folk song (kwv txhiaj) about wearing Hmong clothes to the Hmong New Year.

Kawm ua Paj Ntaub

After exploring the intricate Hmong paj ntaub techniques and decoding the meanings woven into their symbols, we picked up our needles and began the journey of cross-stitching. For most students, this was their very first time learning to sew.

Kawm txog Zos Hmoob/Tsev Hmoob

Students explored traditional Hmong house foundations and tools before building their own miniature houses using authentic techniques and structures.
