What do we do in AVID?

AVID students are busy! We spend a lot of time working together to support and encourage each other, so that each of us can challenge ourselves academically. We work on building academic skills, learn about colleges and careers, and work to become a strong AVID community.

Build academic skills!

AVID students work on developing the five WICOR skills (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading) throughout the AVID curriculum. Academic skills like note taking, time management, and goal setting are also strongly emphasized. In addition to academic skills, AVID students also learn social and emotional skills to cope with stress and build connection and community, as well as leadership skills.

Tutorials!

AVID students wok in collaborative tutorial groups, with the help of a college tutor, to dig deeper into the content they are learning in their core classes (math, ELA, science, and social studies) and get help understanding anything they are struggling with.

Field Trips!

AVID students generally go on three field trips a year with their AVID class. We usually visit at least on college or university each year, to learn what that school has to offer, what it's like to be a college student, and start thinking about what we want for our college careers. We also go to other fun places like: The Bell Museum, Northern Soda Company, Junior Achievement: Finance Park, Wilderness Inquiry, and more!

Build community!

AVID is all about community. It's the strength of the relationships that we build in AVID that allow students to push themselves to achieve their goals and be the best they can be. We spend a lot of our time in AVID learning how to work together, learning about each other, and learning the importance of standing with each other.

Prepare for college and careers!

Preparing students for wherever their journey takes them after high school is a central focus for AVID. Whatever path you take after high school, we strive to help students develop the academic and professional skills to pursue their goals.
