Students should read the required title The Wild Robot by Peter Brown and complete the written response (see required written assignments below) about The Wild Robot.
Students should select and read at least one other book from the Grade 5 Summer Reading List and read at least two additional books of their choosing (for a total of at least four books). Students may also choose to listen to books on apps like Sora.
Students should record their reading on the summer reading log. This sheet and the written response will be collected in September to share with classmates and teachers.
Summer Writing Expectations for Rising Grade 5 Students:
Complete the two written reflection activities listed below. Responses should be written neatly by hand or typed and printed. Complete one of the written reflection activities on The Wild Robot and the other using another book that you have read this summer.
A conflict in literature can be defined as a struggle between characters or between a character and a challenge. A challenge can either be outside of the character (like a tough mountain to climb) or inside the character (like a tough choice). Choose one conflict from this book, explain what causes the conflict, and discuss how the character deals with the conflict by the end of the book.
Choose a character from the book with whom you closely identify and write a journal entry in the first person, as if you are that character. The character you choose does not have to be the main character. The journal entry should be an account of some meaningful event that occurred in the story. Be sure to include the date, month, and time of your journal entry.
