WHERE DO THE RECORDINGS TAKE PLACE?
For in-person recordings:
Recording take place in our Mobile Booth Airstream Trailer. The Airstream parking location varies according to which city the Mobile Team is currently visiting. After they have signed up for a recording appointment, a team member will call participants to provide them with information about their recording location. This information will also be available in a confirmation email, which will be sent to participants after their confirmation call is complete.
For virtual recordings:
Via the StoryCorps Virtual platform, recordings take place wherever you & your recording partner are located and can be uploaded automatically to our Online Archive. All you need is an electronic device with audio and video capacity. You can also choose to do the recording using only a phone.
StoryCorps recordings are audio only. Video function is included so that you can see one another while you’re recording. The video function is not archived.
WHEN DO RECORDING APPOINTMENTS TAKE PLACE?
We offer five to six recording appointments per day, five days a week (Tuesday-Saturday), between the hours of 10am and 4:30pm.
As a partner you can provide this information to your potential participants to get a sense of their availability. We'll then follow-up with a link to provide you access to book appointments for your specific stop.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE FACILITATOR?
A StoryCorps Facilitator will walk you through the recording process from beginning to end. This includes:
Testing audio before the recording
Guiding participants through the recording process
Actively listening to your conversation and taking notes for the archive
Taking photos of participants for the archive
Archiving and releasing your conversation
While a facilitator will be present for your conversation, they are not typically the one asking questions or leading your conversation. The recording is a conversation that takes place between you an another person, preferably a friend, family member, or someone else you know or want to know better.
HOW DO YOU ADDRESS ISSUES OF IDENTITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY? WHAT PRIVACY SETTINGS ARE AVAILABLE?
People who record with StoryCorps have the option to record anonymously or with a pseudonym, and they can always choose not to sign a release form and not to share the recording with us and just keep a copy for themselves. Two to four weeks after their conversation, participants will receive an email to claim their recording and can choose to share it with the Library of Congress and the StoryCorps Online Archive. These options will be explained in detail to each participant on the day of their appointment.
There are three privacy settings available on the StoryCorps Online Archive: "public" (which means that anyone on the internet would have access to the recording), "private" (which means that only the participants would have access to the recording), and "StoryCorps community" (which means that anyone with a StoryCorps Archive account would have access to the recording). More information about the visibility options is available here. All recordings in our Online Archive will default to "public" online access. Please let us know if you would like the recordings you coordinate to be initially set to "private" or "StoryCorps community" instead. Keep in mind that the privacy settings are separate from the release form; if participants choose to sign a release form. You can find out more here.
WILL WE HAVE ACCESS TO THE RECORDING?
On Tuesday, October 15, 2019 StoryCorps launched the StoryCorps Online Archive. If all participants of a conversation choose to sign a release form, then the conversation will be accessible in our Online Archive two to four weeks after the recording takes place. Community partners can also request an archive of the conversations they helped coordinate. We will send along all of the recordings that participants agreed to release.
WHAT IS A VIRTUAL STORYCORPS RECORDING?
A StoryCorps recording experience is an opportunity for two people who know each other to share an uninterrupted conversation of up to 40 minutes. This conversation is recorded using our StoryCorps Virtual web platform.
Participants then have the ability to archive and share their conversations with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and with the StoryCorps Online Archive.
The process is facilitated by our Mobile Tour Team. Participants are encouraged to record something meaningful to them & their recording partner.
Participants are also encouraged to record in any language; however, our team is only able to fully guide and facilitate the recording process in English and Spanish.

What privacy settings are available for the StoryCorps Online Archive?
All recordings will default to complete public online access. Please let us know if you'd like the recordings you coordinate to be initially set to private instead. Participants who sign a General Release for their recording are giving StoryCorps broad rights to use the recording, both "in real life" and online as signing the General Release also means the full recording will become part of our Online Archive. Recordings will now automatically be set to complete public access online. If you would like your participants to decide the online visibility for their recording when they receive their copy instead, please let us know. Read more about the visibility options here.
