Human Subjects Training
Before you can attend lab meetings or be provided any data derived from human subjects, you must complete the training outlined below and complete the following HIPAA disclosure.

Course Good Clinical Practice Course (US FDA focus)
Responsible Conduct of Research in The Biomedical Sciences
Conflict of Interest *Not required for undergraduate students*.

Select “Login through my Institution”
Select “SUNY- University at Stony Brook”
Under Institutional Courses select link for “View Courses” next to SUNY-University at Stony Brook
Select “Add a Course” under Learner Tools for SUNY - University at Stony Brook
Setting up your courses
For Responsible Conduct of Research in Biomedical Sciences (Responsible Conduct of Research. - Responsible Conduct of Research in The Biomedical Sciences)
1. Select “I want to complete an RCR Course at this time. NOTE: This course does NOT satisfy SBU Human Subjects training requirements.”
2. Select “Basic Course” if you have never completed this
3. Select “ The Biomedical Sciences Course in the RCR”
4. The course should be available under “Active Courses” or “Courses Ready to Begin”
For Human Subjects Protection training in Biomedical Sciences (Human Research - Group 2. Biomedical Course)
1. Select “I want to complete the course in Human Subjects Protection.”
2. Click on the link “SBU Policies and Procedures” and briefly scan document (It is super long so we don’t expect you to read it”
3. Select the response “Yes, I have already reviewed the SUNY-SBU Policies and Procedures document. I am ready to begin the course in human subjects protection.”
4. Select “ Yes, I have NOW completed the review of the SBU Policies and Procedures. Now I want to enroll in the appropriate human subjects protections training course.”
5. Select “ Yes, this is the first time. I Conduct Biomedical human subjects research, I work directly with human subjects AND I do FDA regulated research (drugs, medical devices, biologics).”
6. You should receive a confirmation that says something along the lines of “Your answers to the previous questions have placed you in Group 2. Biomedical Course Group, Stage 1. Basic Course. Your previously completed coursework in this group places you in Stage 2. Refresher Course. Please choose your proper placement for Group 2. Biomedical Course Group”
a. Select: “Stage 1: Basic Course”
For Human Subjects Protection training in Data/Tissues (Human Subjects-Group 3: Data/Tissue)
1. Select “I want to complete the course in Human Subjects Protection.”
2. Select “ Yes, this is the first time. I Conduct research with data or specimens ONLY. I do not work directly with human subjects (recruiting, consenting, procedures).”
For Conflict of Interest mini-course (Conflict of Interest mini-course- Conflict of Interest)
1. Select “I want to complete the Conflict of Interest Course at this time.”
2. Select “ YES The training you are about to undergo will satisfy the COI training requirement necessary to receive PHS awards, as well as SBU's COI training requirement.”
For Good Clinical Practice (Course Good Clinical Practice Course (US FDA focus))
1. Select “ I want to complete the Good Clinical Practice Course at this time. NOTE: This course does NOT satisfy SBU Human Subjects training requirements.”
Select “ CITI Good Clinical Practice Course (US FDA focus) Course”

After completing CITI training, please review the following webpages HIPAA, Notice of Privacy, HIPAA General Information, and HIPAA Resources .
Satisfy this HIPAA training requirement by:
sending an e-mail to ORC_HS_Training_Documents@stonybrook.edu.
The subject line reading “HIPAA RESEARCH TRAINING COMPLETED”
The body of the text reading: "I have read and understood the HIPAA awareness training materials and agree to comply with the SBU Policy and Procedures on Research Subjects' Right to Privacy."
Once completed, please forward us this email indicating that you've read and agree to SBU's HIPAA in Research policies.
