Google Data Indicates Cyclical Pattern in Sports Injury Interest
By Ryan Magill
As the issue of traumatic head injuries has continued to plague sports, data pulled from Google seems to indicate that much of the cyclical interest comes from fans of the various sports.
For this article, I compiled a list of specific key words to match up against online search results for contact sports like football, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, hockey, boxing, MMA and more, as well as checking across all available levels (pro, college, amatueur, etc.) to get the best idea of how people are reacting to the issues of head injuries in sports.
To do this, I used Google Trends. A site created and managed by Google, it provides in-depth and comprehensive analysis of the search results of its users across its entire history and all over the world. You can search for keywords and through areas of interest, demonstrating search result trends obtained by the largest search engine on Earth.
As the data shows, the issue is not one for just football. Multiple sports and multiple leagues face the issue of accepting and understanding the issue of how head injuries affect their athletes, and hopefully renewed interest in the topic will allow for progressive discussions on the issues.
