Hello! My name is Katia Laina Mihael, and I am currently a senior at Stony Brook University. My primary focus is social work, and I plan to pursue licensure as a school social worker in the near future. Intersectionality plays a crucial role in understanding social and economic justice, human rights, and social change. It is particularly important to me because recognizing intersectionality allows individuals to be seen and understood in all aspects of their identity. This perspective enables social workers to more effectively address the injustices and privileges that individuals may experience. I am a strong advocate for inclusivity and equality, with a commitment to creating an equitable environment for all.
I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in psychology, while also enrolled to begin my master's degree in social work for the upcoming fall semester here at Stony Brook University. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to continue my passion for learning. My objective is to master the skills I will acquire at Stony Brook University and apply them in an educational setting. As a future social worker, I am dedicated to expanding my knowledge in how to assist individuals with mental health and behavioral concerns, while also creating a safe and positive support system that addresses their individual needs.
I work as a substitute teacher aide at Nassau BOCES – Center for Community Adjustment (CCA).
Beyond my passion for learning, I also find great fulfillment in working with individuals across a wide age range. I currently serve as a recreational aide and a substitute teacher aide for two different programs on Long Island. Communicating with a diverse group of students has provided me with valuable insights into their unique emotional and mental needs.
My strengths lie in interpersonal communication and in being an integral part of a person's support system. With that in mind, forming genuine connections with colleagues, future employers, and other individuals interested in the fascinating field of social work is of utmost importance to me.
