A Volcanic Eruption (Incident)
Volcano Eruption in Tonga
After staying relatively inactive since 2014, the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano erupted on Jan. 15, 2022. It began erupting in late December 2021 and then violently exploded in mid-January 2022. The eruption sent atmospheric shock waves, sonic booms, and tsunami waves worldwide.
The Tonga volcano eruption of 2022 has been confirmed as the largest explosive eruption of the 21st century, and on par with the biggest eruptions ever recorded. Having ejected material around 10 cubic kilometers (more than 2 cubic miles) in volume, generating an atmospheric shock wave that circled the world several times, and producing an ash plume half the size of France, the eruption was equivalent in strength to the cataclysmic 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines.
Volcano Eruption in Mexico City
Mount Popocatepetl, Mexico's second-highest mountain at 5,400 meters above sea level, remained dormant for more than 50 years after a major eruption in 1947 but resumed operations in the 1990s.
During the most powerful eruption of 2000, about 50,000 people were evacuated from three nearby states.
Recently, the Popocatepetl volcano erupted on the morning of June 17, 2019, local time. The volcanic ash flew to a nearby area of 4 kilometers, and Central Mexico was in the zone of influence.
