Friday 12/5/25
ELA- Students started class with small group work finishing up their "T" charts from yesterday's class. They used their "T" chart to complete a writing task describing Virgil's experience with the garden. No homework over the weekend, enjoy!
MATH- Students played some enthusiastic rounds of the "Boss Counting" game to work on their multiples, and then worked independently on Practice Buddy 3-4. Students also shared the multiplication word problems they had written and looked to identify key words and multiplication situation indicators within each other's work. There is no new work over the weekend. It is a great time to catch up if you missed any classes or any homework assignments.
SCIENCE- Students all worked with Lego sets to model different aspects of atomic theory and state changes. We started a set of "Brainpop" tasks to further work with these ideas. Thursday 12/4/25
ELA- Today we focused on the elements of a paragraph. Students collected evidence from Seedfolks with their partner and began an outline for a paragraph. Students were responding to the prompt "How can one person impact a community?" Homework: Reading Log #9 due Friday. Please follow all directions for full credit.
MATH- Students took more ownership of the standard algorithm procedures, shifting to from whole class to independent practice with reference materials. For classwork, students finished the "Multo" challenge and started Practice Buddy 3-4. We will continue working on this Practice Buddy tomorrow. Tonight's homework is a Google Classroom Question.
SCIENCE- We expanded our Lego model to include states of matter and changes of state. We watched demonstrations about the "Particle Nature of Matter" on video and collaborated on a related Kahoot challenge. Tuesday 12/2/25
ELA- Today we read a chapter in Seedfolks from the perspective of Sam. We discussed his perspective on the garden and how it changes throughout his chapter. Homework: Reading Log #9 due Friday. Please follow all directions for full credit.
MATH- Students learned the "Boss Counting" game and played it in small groups to practice multiples. We also worked as a whole class to become more familiar with the steps of the standard algorithm for multiplication. Many students practiced using the "Multo" game in SAVVAS. Tonight's homework is the worksheet "Daily Review 3-4." (You may use any method for the multiplication problems. Just be sure to show your work on paper and bring it with you.)
SCIENCE- We discussed states of matter--and turtles--based on last night's homework Edpuzzle. We reviewed some scientific practices and applied them to recording observations and hypothesis for three different mystery jars. Monday 12/1/25
ELA- Today students worked on their writing stamina and created a narrative about their favorite day from break! We also refreshed our memories about the characters we have met so far in Seedfolks so that we are ready to keep reading tomorrow. Homework: Reading Log #9 due Friday. MATH- Students practiced their multiplication facts with a different type of multiplication chart built as a collection of arrays. We also examined and compared two methods for multiplying with bigger numbers--area models and the standard algorithm. Tonight's homework is a timed multiplication chart
SCIENCE- After a non-fiction read aloud about a science writer and the lessons she learned, we previewed the vocabulary for our next science unit. ELA- We had a writer's workshop day! Students worked on finishing their personal narratives using the editors checklist! No homework :).
MATH- We shared observations about patterns in last night's homework. We also compared and contrasted many different methods for multiplying two digit numbers. There is no new homework. Please keep working on any overdue or incomplete assignments.
SCIENCE- We shared our comparisons about the two newest Gizmos, previewed the next science unit, and examined Lego models of water molecules. If you missed class today, please make up today's "Plant Q and Q" next week after school or during a WIN period. There is no new homework. Tomorrow during WIN is a great time to show me any late work.

ELA- Rob Buyea came to visit today! Students listened to a presentation to start our day and participated in a writer's workshop with the author during one of their other class periods throughout the day. Students presented their BMT project during their other Mrs. Kaldas class period.

MATH- We reviewed estimating the multiplication of large whole numbers by rounding, multiplying the basic fact, and annexing the proper number of zeros. ELA- We continued reading our novel Seedfolks. Students enjoyed learning about the character Leona and her confident attitude towards change!
MATH- Students added onto their Math digital binders and corrected yesterday's work. Students also practiced estimating large multiplication problems by first rounding the factors. We finished off math for this week with the continuation of our ongoing multiplication squares games.
SCIENCE- We set up our science digital binders and reviewed for Monday's quiz.

Wednesday 11/19/25
ELA- We continued reading our novel Seedfolks. Today's chapters were written from the perspectives of the characters Wendell and Gonzalo. We discussed how the characters reactions to the vacant lot were different and similar from one another. Homework: Vocabulary Packet for the Wednesday night slideshow posted on Google Classroom.
MATH- We practiced multiplication with multiples of powers of 10 (i.e. 20 x 700 = 14,000). We introduced rounding to estimate larger multiplication problems. Many students also continued their games of Multiplication Squares. Tonight's homework is a Google Classroom Question.

Tuesday 11/18/25
ELA- Today students worked in groups to complete a graphic organizer comparing and contrasting two characters perspectives of the vacant lot in our novel Seedfolks. Then, independently they completed a writing task using the graphic organizer as a guide. Homework: Finish Monday nights vocab if incomplete.
MATH- We carefully examined the transition from solving single digit multiplication facts (like 3 x 5 = 15) to solving multiplication problems involving multiples of powers of 10 (like 30 x 500 = 15,000). Wednesday 11/12 /25
ELA- Today we were introduced to our new novel Seedfolks. We started this unit with some background knowledge about the setting. Students started their vocabulary packets in class. We will continue with this introduction to the novel tomorrow! Homework: BMT Final Project due Monday 11/17.
MATH- We reviewed math vocabulary, discussed tomorrow's quiz, and practiced decimal subtraction with a Class Clash Jognog. Tonight's homework is to get ready for tomorrow's decimal test. The test may including anything we have done with decimals, especially recent activities like rounding, estimating, adding, and subtracting.
SCIENCE- Students completed their properties charts (purple papers) with a final property of their choice. We also started the SAVVAS tasks including a video and an "interactivity." Tonight's homework is a Google Classroom Question preparing for tomorrow's special visitor from the MWRA.
SOCIAL STUDIES- Students completed their Northeast States map quiz to start class. Once they finished they learned about Slave Auctions that used to take place in the colonies. No homework tonight!

Monday 11/10/25
ELA- Our BMT final project was introduced. Students selected which one they were most interested in and began working on it. Projects are homework and are due on Monday 11/17.
MATH- We reviewed rounding, estimating, adding, and subtracting with decimals. Then students worked towards completing their Test Review Practice Buddy and the Math practice problems on Jognog. There is no new homework, but it is a great night to catch up on any incomplete work.
SCIENCE- Students calculated the density of their individual objects. Students also explored the Density Gizmo and worked on the assigned Science Jognogs. No new homework tonight.
SOCIAL STUDIES- We had the privilege of heading out to the Field on Honor. We learned all about the Field of Honor from a very knowledgeable veteran! Students completed an exit ticket about what they learned when we returned inside. Homework: Study for Northeast Maps quiz.

Friday 11/7/25
ELA- Students completed a graded check in for the second half of BMT. They did a great job showing what they know! Afterwards students completed an ACE response and worked on their narrative writing piece. No homework over the weekend, enjoy some R&R!
MATH- We introduced expectations and strategies for showing work on grid paper and for labels in word problems. Students started the Decimal Test Review Practice Buddy, but that assignment is not yet due. No new homework this weekend, but if you are not caught up, it is a great time to catch up.
SCIENCE- We continued working with properties of matter including more students measuring the volume of their individual objects and all students practicing on Jognog. No homework this weekend.

ELA- Today we finished reading Because of Mr. Terupt as a full class! We stopped and discussed what we were reading. The students were very excited with the outcome at the end of the book! MATH- We compared and contrasted several ways to represent subtraction with decimals. We reviewed procedures for borrowing (regrouping) when subtracting. SCIENCE- Students measured the volume of their individual object using graduated cylindars and water. We also reviewed last night's homework and the Quarter 2 homework expectations. ELA- Today we read BMT. Our focus was on the character Jeffrey and his life at home. After we finished reading, students completed a reflection and watched an EdPuzzle about quotations! Homework: Reading Log #6 is due Friday. Please follow all the directions for full credit.
MATH- Students worked with partners to write directions for rounding decimals in their own words, and these ideas were shared with the class. Ms. Levi retaught rounding decimals, and students practiced on their place value charts. Then students started their homework in class with teacher support available. ELA- Today we practiced speaking in front of the class with a Thinslide assignment. Students did a great job naming their favorite character from BMT and why! ELA- We focused on narrative writing today. Students were challenged to bring readers into their stories and not just tell what was happening. They thought about all that they could see, hear and feel to help them with this!
MATH- We further practiced comparing decimals using visual models, using a place value chart, or by creating equivalent decimals. We also completed a "Homework Helper" worksheet applying place value concepts to decimal numbers. Students in 368 worked on a Practice Buddy, and other students will do that next week. ELA- Today we continued working with the STEAL method for characterization. The characters we focused on today were Jessica and Jeffrey. MATH- We set up and introduced a new dry erase template for modeling with decimals. We compared it to place value blocks that most students were familiar with. Tonight's homework is the worksheet named "Ordering Whole Numbers."

ELA- We continued reading our class novel Because of Mr. Terupt today! We began part "November". Our skill focus throughout this portion of the book will be characterization. MATH- We practiced decimal place value including switching number forms. We also set up our Math/Science JogNog accounts and practiced individually answering questions related to decimal place value. Tonight's homework is a Math Google Classroom Question.
SCIENCE- Today students shared different answers from the "Analysis" section of their water drop experiments. We discussed those answers as well as how to use the provided framework to write a clear specific conclusion sentence. Students had in class time to work on finishing their own versions, and many students read their final conclusion statements for the class. Any students wanting additional help with finishing the assignment were offered individual help after school today. The experiment papers will be collected tomorrow. Spartan Run Day!!!! We had an awesome time participating in the Spartan Run! We were rewarded with popsicles at the end and a relaxing movie with our homerooms. Congrats to Ms. Levi's homeroom for being the highest fundraising class in the 5th grade!

We also acted out a silly example of an "unfair race" to help students better understand why controlling variables (i.e. having "fair races") is so important for science experiments. ELA-Today we focused on narrative writing! We tried out two different strategies for brainstorming ideas that would make a strong personal narrative. Students brainstormed stories with different people and places. No homework over the weekend, enjoy the warm weather!
MATH- We introduced our new number form, expanded form "the fifth grade way," which includes writing each term using exponents. We started Practice Buddy 1-1 together and will continue working on it together next week. There is no new homework, but quite a few students have been given a fifth chance to earn full credit on on their Tuesday and Wednesday work by finishing over the weekend.
SCIENCE- We finished our first "Plant Q and Q" by focusing on the second Q: quantitative observations. This included counting and measuring with our plants, and recording the data on slide 4 of the plant slides. There is no new homework, but quite a few students have been given a fifth chance to earn full credit on on their Tuesday and Wednesday work by finishing over the weekend.

ELA- We completed a summer learning activity and discussed the importance of where we live. We discussed how our environment impacts our way of life. Homework: Summer Learning Reading Log due Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES- Today we learned about primary and secondary sources. We watched a Brainpop, participated in a whole class game/discussion identifying primary sources and came up with two of our own slides! No homework tonight.

ELA- We finished up our Writing Goals for the school year. Students decorated their stars which will be displayed in the classroom. We had a shortened class due to a PowerSchool presentation. Homework: Summer Learning Reading Log due Friday.

ELA- Today we discussed Literary Genres! We played Blooket before moving onto partner work. Students worked on learning the different genres and how to identify which books are in each category.
