KEY LINKS

Welcome to STK Literacy!

This is our website dedicated to improving standards of literacy both at home and in school. We are hoping that students, teachers and parents can use this site to access a range of support materials that will be useful in the development of outstanding literacy skills.

The website features the following areas:

Reading for Pleasure: There is clear evidence that reading well is intrinsically linked to success; students that read regularly will achieve higher grades in their exams. But more importantly, reading should be a pleasurable experience. This part of the site will support you in your reading journey and hopefully inspire you and your children to read more and challenge yourselves with new and exciting texts. Linked to this will be our OLC news and calendar of events across the year with fantastic opportunities for your child to get involved in activities and competitions, linked to their favourite books and authors.

Accelerated Reader: This programme is integral to students' development of their reading, In this area of the site, you can find guides to help you and your child to get the most out of the programme and also more information about MyOn, our new online reading app.

Literacy Tools - you will find a comprehensive Guide to Grammar, to encourage students to write more accurately, a key skill for GCSE in all subjects. New to our school is our explicit teaching of Tier 3 vocabulary - the key terminology for each subject discipline. This is key to students understanding their subjects and succeeding in their examination courses. We are using Frayer Models, which are graphic organisers of these key terms, which explore not only definitions, but also the etymology of our chosen words and the correct usage of them. These support materials will help students to develop a more sophisticated vocabulary and improve their written and spoken communication.

Our LIFE Talk curriculum is another new development, with the aim of explicitly teaching students how to speak and listen effectively in a variety of situations. These lessons are being delivered throughout Year 7 and there will be some exciting events and competitions linked to them.

Finally, we would like to showcase the talent of our amazing students, from their creative writing and debating skills. Look out for our ‘Writing of the Week’ and news of our debating competitions.
