Sally Ride's parents were Carol Joyce Ride and Dale Burdell Ride. Sally was the oldest. Her younger sister is Karen (Bear) Ride. Their dad was a social studies teacher and a science professor and their mom was a counselor at a prison for women. Sally had a dream of being a tennis professional. Sally had a strong passion for science at a young age. At age 10, she played tennis and won a scholarship to Westlake School for Girls in Los Angeles. In her teens, she was ranked 18th nationally on the junior tennis circuit.
After she left NASA in 1987, her passion for space and science continued. Ride joined Stanford University Center for International Security and Arms Control. She later became a professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego.
