June 27, 1874-1875 The Red River War was the last major military war between the United States and the southern Plains Indians. The Dawes Severalty Act, was a law fought for by Senator Henry Dawes of Massachusetts that gave the federal government the power to break up Native land and give it out to tribal individuals.
