Brief history before Maryland became a state: Maryland's first inhabitants were the Paleo-Indians. 1st Baron Baltimore, George Calvert, applied Charles 1st a royal charter. In 1564, Giovanni da Verrazzano sailed passed the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. In 1608, John Smith set foot in the bay and explored it.
