Brief history of New Mexico before it became a state? Diverse Native Americans used to live in the area where New Mexico is, and most of them were Pueblo Indians. In the 16th century, Spanish people started exploring the place, and over the years, New Mexico went from the Spanish territory to part of Mexico, then, after the Mexican-American War, it became U.S. territory in 1848.
