Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Chisholm was born in New York City on November 30, 1924. She grew up in Barbados and in Brooklyn, New York.
spent part of her childhood in Barbados with her grandmother, receiving a British education and returning to Brooklyn to finish school and attend Brooklyn College.

Her accomplishments
Shirley Chisholm's major accomplishments include being the first Black woman elected to Congress, serving seven terms representing New York's 12th congressional district, and becoming the first Black woman to seek a major party's presidential nomination.
Her later years
After retiring from Congress in 1983, Shirley Chisholm remained active, teaching at Mount Holyoke College, co-founding the National Political Congress of Black Women, and becoming a sought-after speaker on the lecture circuit, before passing away on January 1, 2005.
