She was born on January 1, 1752 and died on January 30, 1836.
She was born Elizabeth Griscom on January 1, 1752, in Gloucester City, New Jersey. She was the eighth of seventeen children, but only nine survived childhood. Her family moved to Philadelphia when she was three, where she attended a Quaker school and learned to sew from her great-aunt. After completing her schooling, she apprenticed as an upholsterer.
She attended a Quaker school when she was 3 years old where she learned to read, write, and sew.
Betsy Ross was a successful businesswoman and likely made flags for the Pennsylvania Navy.
After the Revolution, Betsy Ross continued to run her upholstery and seamstress shop, eventually making U.S. flags for over 50 years. She retired at age 76 and lived with her daughter Susanna Satterthwaite. By 1833, she was blind but continued to share the story of making the first American flag with her family. She died peacefully in her sleep on January 30, 1836, at the age of 84.
