JANE ADDAMS
Her full name is Laura Jane Addams
She is an author, Human Rights Activist, Social Activist, Journalist, Physician, and Philosopher
She was born September 6th, 1860 and died May 21st, 1935
Childhood information
Addams spent her childhood playing outdoors, reading indoors, and attending Sunday school. When she was four she contracted tuberculosis of the spine, known as Potts's disease, which caused pain in her spine and lifelong health problems. Nonetheless, she grew up with privilege; her father was among the town's wealthiest citizens. He owned a successful mill, fought in the Civil War, was a local politician, and counted Abraham Lincoln as one of his friends. She also grew up with liberal Christian values and a strong sense of social mission.
Her Education:
In 1881, Jane Addams graduated from the Rockford Female Seminary, the valedictorian of a class of seventeen, but was granted the bachelor's degree only after the school became accredited the next year as Rockford College for Women.
In the course of the next six years she began the study of medicine, but left it because of poor health, was hospitalized intermittently, traveled and studied in Europe for twenty-one months, and then spent almost two years in reading and writing and in considering what her future objectives should be. At the age of twenty-seven, during a second tour to Europe with her friend Ellen G. Starr, she visited a settlement house, Toynbee Hall, in London’s East End.
Accomplishments:
Addams was the first woman president of the National Conference of Social Work. A pacifist, she served as president of the International Congress of Women in 1915 and founded the Woman's Peace Party, the predecessor to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
Later Years:
In her later years, Jane Addams remained active in social reform and the peace movement, co-founding the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, and continuing to work with Hull House, before passing away in 1935.
