There is a lot of plastic waste in the ocean: bottles, bags, stryofoam and more. Approximately 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year and 14 million of those tons end up in the ocean. That means plastics make up over 80% of the waste in the ocean. As well as every 60 seconds, the equivalent of a truckload of plastic enters the ocean. Over 100 million marine animals die every year. Part of this is because there are over 500 locations recorded as dead zones where marine life cannot exist. Up to one trillion plastic bags are used worldwide each year, thats 160,000 per second.
We need your help to stop this from happening. Here are some things you can do:
1. Buy Reusable Products
Instead of buying throwaway cutlery, plastic bottles, and plastic bags buy reusable items such as your own Starbucks Cup.
2. Boycott plastics and micro-beads:
Get a group of people to come together and email the company/companies you are boycotting. Stop using those little tiny plastic beads found in bathroom products and use sustainably made products such as salt or oatmeal.
3. Cook more:
Not only is cooking healthier, it avoids takeout containers and plastic cutlery. If you do have to eat out you can take your own containers.
4. Purchase items secondhand:
Buying your kid's toys or your gadgets secondhand will both save you a lot of money and help avoid those hard plastics and peanut package shipping.
5. Recycle:
Check out the number on the bottom of the container. If you find (PET), (PP) or (HDPE) you can recycle that product.
