Auditions

Principal Dame and biggest role. Owner of Gertie Greville’s Grand Circus and mother of Gouldilocks and Billy.  Loud, warm, comic and audience-facing, with lots of jokes and interaction. She is desperate to save her struggling circus from De Ville and eventually goes looking for magical help. A major comic role requiring confidence, personality and good audience rapport.

Principal comic. Gertie’s son and Gouldilocks’ brother. He dreams of becoming a proper clown but initially gets stuck doing odd jobs. He establishes a recurring “Dilly dilly gang!” audience routine and has lots of jokes and interaction. Energetic, likeable and deliberately silly, but also important to moving the plot along.  We will consider making this role female (Billie) where required.

Principal girl/heroine. Gertie’s daughter and Billy’s sister. A performer in the circus who helps find the Three Bears and persuade them to become the circus’s new star attraction. Generally more sensible than Gertie and Billy and provides the heart of the story, particularly when reassuring Baby Bear before the performance.

Principal villain. A miserable debt collector/businessman who hates circuses and entertainment following an embarrassing childhood experience at a circus. He wants Gertie’s money and ultimately takes control of the circus, transforming it into a miserable factory. Lots of opportunities for traditional audience booing. Eventually sees the error of his ways.

One of De Ville’s two comic assistants, partnered with Anchor. Works for De Ville but provides much of the comedy surrounding the villain. The pair function as a comic double act and have plenty of opportunities for wordplay, misunderstandings and physical comedy.

The other half of the Hope and Anchor comedy double act. Another substantial supporting role. Like Hope, Anchor works for De Ville but isn't really threatening and is primarily there for comedy. Hope and Anchor can work particularly well with two performers who have strong chemistry.

Father of the Bear family. Protective, confident and full of bear-related jokes and puns. Initially suspicious of Gertie, Billy and Gouldilocks after discovering them in his house, but eventually agrees that the family should join the circus. Has a sizeable supporting role and participates in several musical numbers.

Mother of the Bear family. Caring, practical and often a foil to Daddy Bear. She joins Daddy and Baby Bear in becoming the circus’s star attraction and later suffers alongside the other performers when De Ville converts the circus into his factory.

The youngest Bear. More vulnerable and nervous than her parents. She becomes particularly anxious about performing in front of the circus audience, allowing Gouldilocks to encourage and reassure her. A sympathetic part with singing/dancing opportunities as part of the Three Bears.

Magical authority figure of the enchanted forest. Wise, reassuring and generally sensible, although still part of the comedy. Helps Gertie, Billy and Gouldilocks after De Ville takes the circus and eventually assists with the magical plan to change him. A substantial Act 2 role.

A mischievous magical character from the enchanted forest. More naughty and adventurous than Mother Nature and secretly follows the others into the Wicked Woods. Helps with the magical solution and has playful interaction with Puttocks.

A creature associated with the Troll King. A relatively small but distinctive comic/magical role. Develops a playful relationship with Pixie, including an amusing sequence where he compliments her as part of gathering ingredients for the potion.
